Actor Ethan Hawke<\/a> said Robert Redford<\/a> was one of the heroes of his life \u2015 but the final thing the Hollywood legend said to him was anything but heroic. (Watch the video below.)<\/strong><\/p>\n The \u201cDead Poets Society\u201d star reeled off several warm anecdotes about Redford, who died earlier this month at age 89<\/a>, on \u201cJimmy Kimmel<\/a> Live!\u201d Wednesday.<\/p>\n Buzz: ‘REJECTED!’: Stephen Colbert Gives ‘Thin-Skinned Devil Baby’ Trump A Painful Reminder<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n Then Hawke asked Kimmel, \u201cCan I tell you the last words he ever said to me?\u2019\u201d before revealing that Redford told him, \u201c\u2018Stop wearing a cowboy hat. People will think you\u2019re losing your hair.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Hilariously wise words from a matinee idol who wore hats in such classics as \u201cButch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,\u201d \u201cJeremiah Johnson\u201d and \u201cThe Natural\u201d \u2015 but probably not the pro tip Hawke was looking for when they last chatted 18 months ago.<\/p>\n Hawke, who now appears in \u201cThe Lowdown\u201d series<\/a> on FX\/Hulu, said Redford kept in touch through the years after Hawke seized up starstruck auditioning for Redford\u2019s 1992 movie \u201cA River Runs Through It.\u201d Redford invited him to try again the next day and told Hawke that he had nailed the scene, but was too young for the part, according to Hawke.<\/p>\n But the Oscar-winning director wasn\u2019t done mentoring him.<\/p>\n Buzz: Rihanna Welcomes Baby Girl \u2014 And Her Name Is A Perfect Ode To Dad<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n A few months later, he showed up unannounced at an off-off-off Broadway show Hawke was in and gave him encouragement backstage, the actor recalled.<\/p>\n Redford also advocated for an unsung 1995 movie Hawke starred in called \u201cBefore Sunrise\u201d and premiered it at his own Sundance Film Festival, Hawke said. Even better, Redford took him skiing before the premiere.<\/p>\n But there was a time when Redford drew the line.<\/p>\n Hawke\u2019s documentary series<\/a> about Redford\u2019s longtime pal Paul Newman, who died in 2008, and his wife Joanne Woodward premiered in 2022. Kimmel inquired whether Redford ever saw it.<\/p>\n
