Alexander Skarsg\u00e5rd<\/strong><\/a> revealed that he gets \u201cquite excited\u201d to shoot \u201cgraphic\u201d sex scenes.<\/p>\n

The Big Little Lies alum, 49, and costar Harry Melling<\/strong><\/a> have multiple intimate scenes in their critically-acclaimed romantic drama Pillion, which chronicles a BDSM relationship between a biker gang leader (Skarsg\u00e5rd) and a shy young man (Melling) who lives with his terminally ill mother.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was excited because [the sex scenes] are interesting [in Pillion],\u201d Skarsg\u00e5rd told The Hollywood Reporter<\/a> in an interview published on Thursday, September 25. \u201cAnd that\u2019s quite rare. Most sex scenes on screen are quite boring and sanitized.\u201d<\/p>\n

Skarsg\u00e5rd and Melling agreed that Pillion\u2019s often unflinching depictions of sex were refreshing to film specifically because they didn\u2019t shy away from any \u201cawkwardness.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhen it comes to filming sex scenes for TV shows and movies, actors have had a variety of good and bad experiences. Intimacy coordinator Brooke M. Haney previously opened up to Us Weekly about how filming steamy scenes between actors goes down on set. Contrary to what some fans may think, Haney said that it [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cHere, we really leaned into the authenticity, the awkwardness of sex, which I thought was really funny and sweet,\u201d Skarsg\u00e5rd noted. \u201cIt\u2019s quite rare to have a sex scene that actually has an emotional journey. There\u2019s stuff happening, and it\u2019s like erotic and sexy, but then it\u2019s awkward, and then it\u2019s funny. I think [director Harry Lighton<\/strong>] instilled a lot of trust in us. We just felt very comfortable. There was no trepidation going in. Quite the opposite. We were excited to jump in.\u201d<\/p>\n

Melling, 36, insisted that the way Pillion uses sex is entirely necessary to its story of two outsiders finding a rare connection through physical intimacy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s so much narrative laced into the sex. It\u2019s not just like there\u2019s a film and then here\u2019s a sex scene,\u201d the Harry Potter <\/a>actor added. \u201cThey are so much a part of the movie, certainly for [his character] Colin\u2019s journey in going from inexperience to being a bit more experienced. Threading that narrative in there, and getting all the clumsy beats and the awkward beats, felt like a continuation of the narrative. It was thrilling to continue Colin\u2019s journey within these very detailed sex scenes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked whether any sex scenes were deemed too explicit for Pillion\u2019s final cut, Skarsg\u00e5rd joked: \u201cOh yeah, we\u2019ve got some extra scenes we\u2019ve saved for the Christmas Special edition, a triple X version for the kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, we shot some stuff that was a bit more graphic, that Harry [Lighton] decided not [to] use, but nothing too crazy,\u201d he then confirmed.<\/p>\n

Skarsg\u00e5rd and Melling appear in the drama alongside Joker actor Douglas Hodge<\/strong>, and Catherine Called Birdy\u2019s Lesley Sharp<\/strong>, as well as Scissor Sisters singer Jake Shears<\/strong> in his screen acting debut.<\/p>\n

Pillion is based on author Adam Mars-Jones<\/strong>\u2019 2020 book, Box Hill, which won the prestigious Fitzcarraldo Editions Novel Prize. The novel was also shortlisted by the Royal Society of Literature as one of the best British novels in 2021.<\/p>\n
