{"id":2050275,"date":"2025-09-25T22:27:06","date_gmt":"2025-09-25T22:27:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2050275"},"modified":"2025-09-25T22:27:06","modified_gmt":"2025-09-25T22:27:06","slug":"universal-and-sony-music-partner-with-new-platform-to-detect-ai-music-copyright-theft-using-groundbreaking-neural-fingerprinting-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/universal-and-sony-music-partner-with-new-platform-to-detect-ai-music-copyright-theft-using-groundbreaking-neural-fingerprinting-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"Universal and Sony Music partner with new platform to detect AI music copyright theft using \u2018groundbreaking neural fingerprinting\u2019 technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Universal Music Group [4,258 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/universal-music-group\/\">Universal Music Group<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Sony Music Entertainment [1,941 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/sony\/sony-music-group\/sony-music-entertainment\/\">Sony Music<\/a> plan to use what they call \u201cgroundbreaking neural fingerprinting technologies\u201d to detect copyright infringement in AI-generated music.<\/p>\n<p>The two major music companies have each partnered with a research lab called <strong>SoundPatrol<\/strong>, which has developed a patent-pending method to analyze music.<\/p>\n<p>SoundPatrol, which originated at\u00a0<strong>Stanford University,<\/strong> is developing what it calls a \u201cforensic AI model for audio-video fingerprinting,\u201d which it claims \u201crepresents a step change from existing detection methods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The partnership arrives as rightsholders face mounting challenges from AI music generators that allegedly use copyrighted material without permission to train their models. <span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; RIAA [485 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/riaa\/\">The RIAA<\/a> has cases going\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/inspired-by-anthropics-1-5b-book-piracy-payout-record-labels-accuse-suno-of-illegally-stream-ripping-music-from-youtube\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">against AI startups Udio and Suno. <\/a>T<\/span>he majors also <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/inspired-by-anthropics-1-5b-book-piracy-payout-record-labels-accuse-suno-of-illegally-stream-ripping-music-from-youtube\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filed an amended complaint<\/a> against the latter company just a few days ago, accusing it of illegal \u201cstream-ripping\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>UMG and Sony Music-backed SoundPatrol was co-founded by <strong>Michael Ovitz<\/strong>, the prominent entertainment exec who co-founded <strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Creative Artists Agency (CAA) [100 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/creative-artists-agency-caa\/\">Creative Artists Agency<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong>Walter De Brouwer<\/strong>, a noted linguist and entrepreneur.<\/p>\n<p>Producer <strong>Oak Felder<\/strong> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Milk &amp; Honey [73 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/milk-honey\/\">Milk &amp; Honey<\/a> President, <strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"People &gt; Lucas Keller [44 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/people\/lucas-keller\/\">Lucas Keller<\/a><\/strong>, were two of the co-founding partners in Soundpatrol, and continue to hold stakes in the platform.<\/p>\n<p>Current music fingerprinting technology looks for exact matches of snippets of music, but SoundPatrol\u2019s <strong>patent-pending tech<\/strong> can also detect covers, remixes, and derivatives created by AI, the lab said in an announcement on Thursday (September 25).<\/p>\n<p>According to a press release, <strong>SoundPatrol\u2019s<\/strong> tech \u201cemploys <strong><span class=\"il\">neural<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"il\">embeddings<\/span><\/strong> that capture and analyze musical semantics in order to identify the influence of original human-created music in fully or partly AI-generated music content\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>\u201cneural embedding\u201d<\/strong> is a way of turning elements of music (or words or other data) into numbers. Our collaboration with <strong>SoundPatrol<\/strong> is about respecting artists\u2019 rights to build a sustainable and equitable ecosystem for everyone,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The technology could prove to be a boon to music companies that have pursued legal action against <strong>AI companies<\/strong> they believe have violated the law by using copyrighted music without permission to train their AI models.<\/p>\n<p>The current spate of lawsuits against AI companies largely rely on comparisons of sheet music or lyrics to make the case that an AI-generated piece of music ripped off a human-made original.<\/p>\n<p>Data from <strong>SoundPatrol<\/strong> could back up those claims with algorithmic data.
