It includes people who found a home in Utah, a sense of belonging. For several celebrities, Utah has been a refuge, an oasis of sorts away from Hollywood. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Here\u2019s just a sampling of Utah\u2019s arts and entertainment celebrities \u2014 including popular people in music, film, dance, theater, books and art. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Did we miss somebody? Let us know in the comments. <\/p>\n<h3 id=\"Popular-music\" class=\"dn-article-body__h3\">Popular music <\/h3>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Singers like Jewel and Brendon Urie from Panic! At the Disco hail from Utah, but didn\u2019t live here long. The Osmond siblings, arguably Utah\u2019s most famous family, have spent decades in the music industry. He <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YLimPvfH7hA&amp;embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.deseret.com%2F&amp;source_ve_path=MjM4NTE\">appeared in a video<\/a> promoting the city of Cottonwood Heights, is the face of a salmon pink Raising Cane\u2019s location in Midvale and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/2023\/2\/18\/23604533\/2023-nba-all-star-game-post-malone-performance-how-to-watch\/\" target=\"_blank\">performed the national anthem<\/a> at the 2023 NBA All-Star Game. He recently launched his first career <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/entertainment\/2025\/04\/30\/from-hip-hop-to-honky-tonk-post-malones-tour-feels-like-home-and-utah-really-really-approves\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/entertainment\/2025\/04\/30\/from-hip-hop-to-honky-tonk-post-malones-tour-feels-like-home-and-utah-really-really-approves\/\">stadium tour at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><b>David Archuleta<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">David Archuleta, a former longtime resident of Murray, rose to fame in his teens after being declared the \u201cAmerican Idol\u201d runner-up in 2008. To date, Archuleta remains the highest-placing Utah singer on the show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The \u201cCrush\u201d singer has released several albums and recently announced his first new music in five years, due later this summer. He\u2019ll return to Utah for a show at Salt Lake City\u2019s The Complex in September. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/2019\/6\/5\/20658665\/for-graham-russell-air-supply-s-upcoming-utah-concert-is-a-true-hometown-show\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/2019\/6\/5\/20658665\/for-graham-russell-air-supply-s-upcoming-utah-concert-is-a-true-hometown-show\/\"><b>Graham Russell<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Graham Russell, the singer-guitarist in Air Supply, discovered his love for Utah while performing a two-weekend stint in Las Vegas more than 30 years ago. He was so stunned by the Wasatch Mountains, he said, that he immediately began looking at land. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201c(The real estate agent said), \u2018I\u2019m going to show you this, but you won\u2019t like it because it\u2019s kind of weird. It was an adventure and it is one that\u2019s still ongoing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Russell is active in his local music scene \u2014 he composed <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/entertainment\/2019\/8\/13\/20758680\/air-supply-graham-russell-musical-a-wall-apart-berlin-wall-broadway-utah-salt-lake-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/entertainment\/2019\/8\/13\/20758680\/air-supply-graham-russell-musical-a-wall-apart-berlin-wall-broadway-utah-salt-lake-city\/\">a musical about the Berlin Wall<\/a> that premiered at Salt Lake City\u2019s Grand Theatre in 2019, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/entertainment\/2025\/06\/13\/who-is-singer-kenadi-dodds-from-agt-toxic-song\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/entertainment\/2025\/06\/13\/who-is-singer-kenadi-dodds-from-agt-toxic-song\/\">and has been mentoring singers<\/a> in Utah.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><b>Brandon Flowers<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Brandon Flowers hails from Henderson, Nevada, but lived much of his youth in Nephi \u2014 an upbringing that was a major influence behind The Killers\u2019 album \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/2021\/8\/17\/22628908\/pressure-machine-the-killers-review-utah-lyrics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/2021\/8\/17\/22628908\/pressure-machine-the-killers-review-utah-lyrics\/\">Pressure Machine<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cMany memories of my time in Nephi are tender,\u201d Flowers, who several years ago moved back to Utah with his family, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.radiox.co.uk\/artists\/the-killers\/brandon-flowers-nervous-pressure-machine-album\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">told RadioX<\/a> in 2021. \u201cBut the ones tied to fear or great sadness were emotionally charged. The band ended up only playing a handful of shows in Utah before catching its big break. Now, it\u2019s celebrating 25 years of being a band with a tour that recently included a three-night stint in Salt Lake City.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve never shied away from where we came from,\u201d McCracken told the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/entertainment\/2025\/05\/03\/the-used-band-talks-utah-roots-25th-anniversary-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/entertainment\/2025\/05\/03\/the-used-band-talks-utah-roots-25th-anniversary-tour\/\">Deseret News<\/a> earlier this year. \u201cIt\u2019s always been a bit of a point of pride for the band.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"Classical-music-and-choir\" class=\"dn-article-body__h3\">Classical music and choir <\/h3>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><b>Maurice Abravanel <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Maurice Abravanel, as Carma Wadley wrote for the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/2004\/9\/10\/19849713\/maurice-abravanel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/2004\/9\/10\/19849713\/maurice-abravanel\/\">Deseret News<\/a> in 2004, was looking for a home. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThe boy who was teased by Swiss children because of his Turkish\/Greek origins, the student who was supposed to study medicine but was drawn to music instead, the musician who came to America to conduct the Metropolitan Opera orchestra but ended up on Broadway &#8230; found it in a place where he shared neither ethnic origin nor religion with most of the citizens, but where he found a common passion for music, for arts, for excellence.\u201d <\/p>\n<div class=\"dn-article-body__image-wrapper\" data-width=\"203\" data-height=\"260\">\n<figure class=\"c-media-item dn-article-body__image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.78;background-color:#F3F1F0;cursor:pointer\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/resizer\/v2\/ZPCPCO2K775AVL3N5XZMS53SHQ.jpg?auth=691819ef25fe001f4bdce67eb9aca7ba6e5f6572c29cceb99c70d4605cd00c3c&amp;focal=0%2C0&amp;width=800&amp;height=1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/resizer\/v2\/ZPCPCO2K775AVL3N5XZMS53SHQ.jpg?auth=691819ef25fe001f4bdce67eb9aca7ba6e5f6572c29cceb99c70d4605cd00c3c&amp;focal=0%2C0&amp;width=1600&amp;height=2048 2x\" width=\"800\" height=\"1024\"\/><figcaption class=\"c-media-item__fig-caption\"><span class=\"c-media-item__credit\"> Deseret Morning News Archives <\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">For 32 years, from 1947-1979, Abravanel served as the music director of the Utah Symphony, transforming it from a community ensemble into one of the leading orchestras in the country. That accomplishment is now honored in the symphony\u2019s home that bears his name.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><b>Gina Bachauer<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Abravanel was close friends with Gina Bachauer. Farnsworth, who was born near Beaver, Utah, in the early 1900s, is credited with inventing the television.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Here\u2019s perhaps a lesser-known fact: The first person to win an Oscar for best director, at the first Academy Awards ceremony in 1927, was <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/o-top-of-the-movie-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/o-top-of-the-movie-industry\/\">Frank Borzage<\/a>, a Salt Lake City native.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Utah\u2019s history with film and television is extensive. The animated short \u201cNinety-Five Senses,\u201d which earned the Hesses their <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/2024\/1\/23\/24048472\/napoleon-dynamite-creators-jared-hess-jerusha-hess-oscar-nomination-ninety-five-senses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">first Oscar nomination<\/a> last year, stemmed from the Salt Lake Film Society\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/maststudio.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">MAST program<\/a>, an initiative that trains and pairs up-and-coming animators with established filmmakers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Jared Hess has cited Utah filmmaker T.C. Christensen (\u201cEphraim\u2019s Rescue\u201d and \u201c17 Miracles\u201d) as a mentor and inspiration in his career. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><b>Katherine Heigl<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/2023\/4\/21\/23693218\/katherine-heigl-utah-home-firefly-lane\/\">Katherine Heigl<\/a> was just a teenager out of high school when she moved to the Los Angeles area, where she ended up living for two decades. After several years in Hollywood, the \u201c27 Dresses\u201d star realized she needed \u201csomewhere to escape to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">She found that space in Summit County, Utah. And over time, what initially was supposed to be a vacation spot became a home. But after graduating from high school, he was ready for a change of scenery and returned to his Utah roots. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI can say in retrospect that my move to Utah at the age of 17 &#8230; was an attempt to run away and get away, because in 1978, Utah wasn\u2019t as established as it is now,\u201d Lookinland told the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/entertainment\/2019\/9\/25\/20883842\/the-brady-bunch-50-years-mike-lookinland-hgtv-a-very-brady-renovation-barry-williams-susan-olsen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/entertainment\/2019\/9\/25\/20883842\/the-brady-bunch-50-years-mike-lookinland-hgtv-a-very-brady-renovation-barry-williams-susan-olsen\/\">Deseret News<\/a> in 2019. \u201cI wanted to get out of L.A., get away from agents and managers and Hollywood and just be a kid in the mountains. That\u2019s how much we like it here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Today, Lookinland operates a custom concrete countertop business called Just Add Water in Midvale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><b>Wilford Brimley<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/entertainment\/2020\/8\/5\/21356012\/wilford-brimley-death-utah-actor-music-stephen-colbert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">Wilford Brimley<\/a>, known for his roles in films like \u201cThe Natural,\u201d \u201cAbsence of Malice\u201d and \u201cCocoon,\u201d was born in Salt Lake City and lived much of his life in Utah. He died in 2020 at the age of 85. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cEven his family says, \u2018Wilford was Wilford Brimley from the time he was born to the time he died,\u2019\u201d Brimley\u2019s friend, John Diehl, previously told the Deseret News. \u201cHe never changed for anyone. He never changed for the industry \u2014 he was who he was. He was his own man, and that says a lot for that industry, to stand fast on who you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><b>Tan France<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Tan France, the fashion expert for the popular series \u201cQueer Eye,\u201d has had a home in Salt Lake City for well over a decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI fly home to Utah as much as I possibly can. Christensen, a Brigham City native and pioneer in American dance, staged the first complete performance of \u201cThe Nutcracker\u201d in the United States with the San Fransisco Ballet in 1944. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Christensen, who established Ballet West in 1963, worked with Abravanel and the Utah Symphony to bring \u201cThe Nutcracker\u201d to Salt Lake City. A vast number of artists depict the landscapes of the West and the pioneers\u2019 journey across the plains. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Several also created murals and other notable artwork for Latter-day Saint temples, including John Hafen, LeConte Stewart, John B. Fairbanks and his son, Avard Fairbanks, whose work includes the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/contentdm.lib.byu.edu\/digital\/collection\/BYUPhotos\/id\/927\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/contentdm.lib.byu.edu\/digital\/collection\/BYUPhotos\/id\/927\/\">bronze cougar<\/a> near LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Here is a sampling of some prominent artists with strong ties to Utah:<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><b>Jann Haworth <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Jann Haworth lived in England for 35 years before making her home in Utah.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In England, she and her then-husband <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/art\/artists\/peter-blake-763\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">Peter Blake<\/a> crossed paths with the Beatles and were commissioned to design the iconic \u201cSgt. Pepper\u201d album cover by creating a mural in downtown Salt Lake City titled <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jannhaworth.com\/Public\/SLCPepper\/SLCPepper.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">\u201cSLC Pepper\u201d<\/a> that celebrates scientific advancement over celebrity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><b>Charles Roscoe Savage<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Charles Roscoe Savage, a 19th-century photographer who lived in Salt Lake City for most of his life, \u201ctracked the growth of this small Western town as it became a major American city &#8230; a visual record of a modern metropolis rising from the desert,\u201d Joe Marotta wrote in a piece for <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/magazine\/2024\/06\/15\/window-on-a-hill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/magazine\/2024\/06\/15\/window-on-a-hill\/\">Deseret Magazine<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Savage is perhaps most known for his 1869 photos that capture the linking of the first transcontinental railroad at Promontory Point. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><b>C.C.A. Christensen<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">One of C.C.A. Christensen\u2019s most notable works, \u201cMormon Panaroma,\u201d came to life in Utah, where he emigrated from Denmark after joining The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She continued to paint Latter-day Saint-themed art throughout her life, including 42 paintings that depict stories from the Book of Mormon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><b>Pilar Pobil<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Pilar Pobil\u2019s largest piece of artwork, a 12-foot painting, hangs in the foyer of the humanities building at the University of Utah. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The acclaimed painter from Spain came to Salt Lake City in 1957.
