Under the direction of Yannick N\u00e9zet-S\u00e9guin, the Philadelphia Orchestra has recorded a fair amount of music by 20th century Black American composers in recent years, winning a Grammy in 2022 for works by Florence Price and releasing the \u201cNegro Folk Symphony\u201d by William Levi Dawson in 2023.<\/p>\n
The newest of these releases, \u201cStill & Bonds \u2013 Symphonies & Variations<\/a>,\u201d includes the second and fourth symphonies by William Grant Still and the \u201cMontgomery Variations\u201d by Margaret Bonds.<\/p>\n Still\u2019s second symphony is subtitled \u201cSong of a New Race,\u201d representing what he termed a totally new individual \u2014 a fusion of White, Indian and African-American,<\/a> reflecting in large part his own ancestry.
