{"id":2051473,"date":"2025-09-26T10:52:20","date_gmt":"2025-09-26T10:52:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2051473"},"modified":"2025-09-26T10:52:20","modified_gmt":"2025-09-26T10:52:20","slug":"wpr-music-new-album-of-the-week-still-bonds-symphonies-variations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/wpr-music-new-album-of-the-week-still-bonds-symphonies-variations\/","title":{"rendered":"WPR Music new album of the week: &#8216;Still &#038; Bonds &#8211; Symphonies &#038; Variations&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Under the direction of Yannick N\u00e9zet-S\u00e9guin, the Philadelphia Orchestra has recorded a fair amount of music by 20th century Black American composers in recent years, winning a Grammy in 2022 for works by Florence Price and releasing the \u201cNegro Folk Symphony\u201d by William Levi Dawson in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The newest of these releases, \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deutschegrammophon.com\/en\/catalogue\/products\/still-bonds-yannick-nezet-seguin-the-philadelphia-orchestra-14200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Still &amp; Bonds \u2013 Symphonies &amp; Variations<\/a>,\u201d includes the second and fourth symphonies by William Grant Still and the \u201cMontgomery Variations\u201d by Margaret Bonds.<\/p>\n<p>Still\u2019s second symphony is subtitled \u201cSong of a New Race,\u201d representing what he termed <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/americansymphony.org\/concert-notes\/darker-america-1924-africa-1930symphony-no-2-1937\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a totally new individual \u2014 a fusion of White, Indian and African-American,<\/a> reflecting in large part his own ancestry. Bonds also became known for collaborating with the poet Langston Hughes. She composed the \u201cMontgomery Variations\u201d after the 1963 firebombing in Birmingham, Alabama, basing the theme and seven variations on the traditional spiritual, \u201cI Want Jesus to Walk with Me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The album is available on the Deutsche Grammophon label, garnering positive reviews both for the quality of the performance and for the orchestra\u2019s commitment to \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deutschegrammophon.com\/en\/catalogue\/products\/still-bonds-yannick-nezet-seguin-the-philadelphia-orchestra-14200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">musical justice<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bonds: Montgomery Variations: II.
