Predator: Badlands director Dan Trachtenberg wanted to make a movie that \u201chadn\u2019t existed before\u201d.<\/p>\n
The 44-year-old director said he aimed to make the upcoming action flick a unique experience that fans haven\u2019t seen in the Predator franchise before, much like he did with 2022\u2019s Prey.<\/p>\n
Speaking with Empire magazine about creating Predator: Badlands, Trachtenberg said: \u201cYou immediately think: Prey 2.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut with sequels, people sometimes get so caught up going, \u2018This could happen next,\u2019 they never stop to think, \u2018Should it happen next?\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cPrey\u00a0was special because it was this big idea that hadn\u2019t existed before. I wanted the next thing to be that, too.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trachtenberg described Predator: Badlands as a \u201ckind of buddy-comedy\u201d between Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi\u2019s hunter Dek and Elle Fanning\u2019s Weyland-Yutani synthetic Thia – a biomechanical humanoid.<\/p>\n
The filmmaker added: \u201cIn general, I\u2019m always looking for: what could happen only in\u00a0this\u00a0movie?<\/p>\n
\u201cPrey\u00a0was a solo survival tale; this is a relationship story.\u201d<\/p>\n
Predator: Badlands follows the young hunter Dek (Schuster-Koloamatangi) after he has been outcast from his clan and sent to a remote planet, where he forms an unlikely alliance with Thia (Fanning) as the pair search for the ultimate adversary.<\/p>\n
Trachtenberg added he wanted audiences to root for Dek – who will be the first protagonist Yautja in the Predator franchise.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cThis crazy adventure against monsters and the elements – only this time it\u2019s a badass Predator against those things.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe wanted Dek to be relatable, but without turning him into Luke Skywalker. He\u2019s still a Predator – we had to allow him to be a d***. But a d*** you can root for.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trachtenberg previously revealed Dek had been inspired by action icons like Mad Max and Conan the Barbarian.<\/p>\n
The 10 Cloverfield Lane director said of Dek: \u201cHe\u2019s a thing of few words, pretty blunt. He cuts straight to the point. Literally and figuratively.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trachtenberg added Dek was viewed as the \u201crunt of the litter\u201d among his clan.<\/p>\n
He explained: \u201cThat feels like a big idea, not just within Predator, but in sci-fi generally.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn most sci-fi universes, the \u2018creatures\u2019 are either bad guys or sidekicks. In [Predator: Badlands] it\u2019s, \u2018What if you were with the creature on this crazy mission to prove itself, seeing everything through its eyes?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
Trachtenberg thinks he has taken a \u201cbig, crazy swing\u201d with Predator: Badlands – which will land in cinemas on November 7, 2025.<\/p>\n
During an interview with Bloody Disgusting, he said: \u201cIt\u2019s a big, crazy swing, and I think that\u2019s what drives butts into seats.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you want the same old Predator experience, you can hit play on Predator or Prey or any other, whichever one is your fit.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
