Mariah Carey explained her reaction to Muni Long\u2019s live performance of \u201cWe Belong Together\u201d in a new interview. Muni delivered a live rendition of the chart topper at the 2025 iHeartRadio Music Awards, preceding Carey\u2019s acceptance of the Icon Award. During her performance, the camera panned to Mariah Carey in the audience, sitting next to Anderson .Paak. <\/a>While it is not clear what she reacted to, a quick, noticeable side eye went viral.<\/p>\n \u201cI didn\u2019t even hear the cover. I didn\u2019t know it happened. No one told me,\u201d shared the 56-year-old to GQ Magazine.<\/a> \u201cI love Muni Long! I just didn\u2019t know that she had done \u2018We Belong Together\u2019 [as a cover] \u2018cause her song was so similar to \u2018We Belong Together.\u2019 I had no idea that she did \u2018We Belong Together.’\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWell, I\u2019m very honored and flattered that she did it. I love Muni Long, she\u2019s a great person, umm, but I just don\u2019t like people doing my songs,\u201d she continued to explain with laughter.<\/p>\n At the time, Muni Long addressed <\/a>critics of her performance by explaining how the moment came to fruition.<\/p>\n \u201cThe people that\u2019s got a lot to say, you don\u2019t understand how this paying homage and having respect for people\u2026\u201d the 36-year-old revealed. \u201cShe asked me to do it\u2026 You thought I chose to get on TV and sing a Mariah Carey song? You thought that was my choice? Why would I do that? Nobody can sing Mariah\u2019s songs like Mariah. Nobody.\u201d<\/p>\n She continued to share, \u201cShe told me I did a great job, she appreciated it. And that\u2019s it. Once again, if she pushed me down the stairs, if she told me she hated it, I would say thank you.
