Mariah Carey<\/a> is here for all the triumphant and turbulent times on her 16th studio album Here for It All, which dropped on Friday (Sept. 26) via gamma.<\/p>\n More from Billboard<\/strong><\/p>\n On her first album in seven years, she turns up the braggadocio on \u201cMi\u201d and \u201cType Dangerous,\u201d luxuriates in confections on \u201cSugar Sweet\u201d (featuring Shenseea<\/a> and Kehlani<\/a>) and \u201cConfetti and Champagne,\u201d and gives glory to the Highest One on \u201cJesus I Do\u201d (featuring The Clark Sisters<\/a>) and the closing title track.<\/p>\n Since 2018\u2019s Caution, she\u2019s kept her finger on the pulse of the hottest singles by hopping on remixes of Latto\u2019s \u201cBig Energy\u201d (which flips Tom Tom Club\u2019s \u201cGenius of Love,\u201d like her own \u201cFantasy\u201d did), Ariana Grande\u2019s Billboard Hot 100<\/a> No. 1 \u201cYes, And?\u201d and Muni Long\u2019s \u201cMade For Me.\u201d She\u2019s also released anniversary editions of past albums on an almost yearly basis, including The Emancipation of Mimi (20th Anniversary Edition) earlier this year. And while she still doesn\u2019t subscribe to the passage of time<\/a>, Carey\u2019s latest addition to her legendary catalog showcases a tried-and-true auteur who\u2019s not concerned with chasing charting hits or critical praise (because she\u2019s had more of both than most artists will get in their entire lifetimes) but rather chasing the high of doing the thing she loves most and is best at.<\/p>\n The elusive chanteuse\u2019s new album was preceded by two singles: \u201cType Dangerous,\u201d which samples Eric B. & Rakim<\/a>\u2018s 1986 track \u201cEric B. Is President,\u201d and \u201cSugar Sweet.\u201d And the rollout for Here for It All has run parallel to the separate red carpet that\u2019s been rolled out for Carey and the iconic career that\u2019s gotten her to this point. In March, she received the Icon Award at the 2025 iHeartRadio Music Awards. Then she performed \u201cType Dangerous\u201d alongside Rakim<\/a>\u00a0and Anderson .Paak<\/a> at the\u00a02025 BET Awards\u00a0<\/a>in June, when she received her\u00a0first BET Award ever<\/a>: the Ultimate Icon Award. And earlier this month, she performed \u201cSugar Sweet\u201d at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards<\/a>, when she received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.<\/p>\n Carey still has nothing left to prove, but she insists on getting back in the booth and recording another reminder of who she is and why she gets to make such an eclectic, free-wheeling album 35 years in.<\/p>\n Read Billboard\u2018s preliminary ranking of all 11 songs from MC\u2019s Here for It All below.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t care about much if it ain\u2019t about me\/ Let the money talk first, conversations ain\u2019t free\/ I\u2019m the D-I-V-A that\u2019s MC\u201d is a hell of a way to start the album. The Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee never ceases to find cheeky ways to position herself above the rest. However, the song\u2019s subtle drill production and \u201cI like my ice cold\/ I like my wrist froze\u201d line feel like contrived ways of conforming with the times, much like her appearance on Kai Cenat\u2019s stream to promote the parent album. Sonically, \u201cMi\u201d is a perplexing opener for an LP that spends the rest of its approximately 40-minute runtime paying homage to Philly soul, disco, soft rock and other nostalgic genres.<\/p>\n The trap-tinged \u201cConfetti and Champagne\u201d calls for an exquisite celebration but doesn\u2019t quite live up to its title. It\u2019s not as satiating as the album\u2019s second single, \u201cSugar Sweet.\u201d And her trademark whistle tone is awkwardly sprinkled into the second chorus. But her deliciously biting delivery of the \u201cCheers, cheers, cheers, cheers, cheers\/ To me, not you, just me\u201d line takes the cake.<\/p>\n Carey confronts her reservations with a former flame who acts too hot and cold on \u201cIn Your Feelings,\u201d which has .Paak\u2019s retro touch all over it. Her hasty vocal pacing on the \u201cI think you might be getting a little bit tooooooooo in your feeeeliiiiiiings\u201d hook might throw listeners off. But when she lets her signature belting range rip right before the final chorus, it\u2019s one of the few times on the project when MC brings out an old trick from up her sleeve \u2014 it just sounds much better on a power ballad like \u201cHere for It All.\u201d<\/p>\n After proudly proclaiming \u201cI was never all alone\/ The spirit lives in my soul\u201d on \u201cNothing is Impossible,\u201d the spirit takes over Carey and The Clark Sisters on the funky gospel cut \u201cJesus I Do.\u201d You can\u2019t help but tap your feet to its thumping bassline or hum along to The Clark Sisters scatting \u201cJesus I dooooooo-oo-oo-ooo\u201d or \u201cJesus I-I-I-I do!\u201d Can I get an \u201cAmen\u201d?<\/p>\n Carey\u2019s sparkle doesn\u2019t dull on her cover of Paul McCartney<\/a> and Wings<\/a>\u2018 1973 Hot 100 No. 1 \u201cMy Love\u201d that McCartney wrote for his wife and bandmate Linda, which Billboard ranked No. 12 on our top 50 love songs of all time list<\/a> this year. While McCartney\u2019s original version is tender, Carey\u2019s is robust, her vocals overpowering the track\u2019s orchestration before giving way to the sentimental, reworked instrumental solo. As someone who admitted<\/a> \u201cI just don\u2019t like people doing my songs\u201d in her recent GQ interview<\/a> \u2014 but also likes adding covers on her albums, like Carey\u2019s version of Prince\u2019s \u201cThe Beautiful Ones\u201d on 1997\u2019s Butterfly \u2014 MC strikes a nice balance between paying homage to a time-honored classic and making it her own.<\/p>\n When Carey and .Paak first sparked dating rumors at the end of last year while cozying up in Aspen during Christmastime, fans were left scratching their heads. TMZ<\/a> later reported that the two were working on new music and Carey confirmed in her latest GQ interview<\/a> that the two have \u201cgreat musical chemistry\u201d amid working on Here for It All. Paak has credits on \u201cType Dangerous,\u201d \u201cIn Your Feelings\u201d and \u201cI Won\u2019t Allow It,\u201d and is featured on \u201cPlay This Song.\u201d<\/p>\n Its Philly soul sound makes \u201cPlay This Song\u201d sound like a leftover Silk Sonic<\/a> song, but with MC taking Bruno Mars<\/a>\u2018 mic \u2014 and that\u2019s not necessarily a bad thing. Carey is right: The two indeed have great musical chemistry (and romantic chemistry, if either of them want to confess to that), as her syrupy, swoon-worthy tone and the warm, raspy texture of .Paak\u2019s voice come together in perfect harmony.<\/p>\n The diva\u2019s swaggering delivery on the lead single \u201cType Dangerous\u201d makes her sound right at home on the hip-hop beat, and her penchant for peppering in multisyllabic, 10-dollar words (\u201cI don\u2019t have time for the rigamarole\u201c) might get the online generation to pick up a dictionary (or rather, ask ChatGPT for the definition). And she\u2019s habitually self-referential, from the lyric \u201cCertified diamonds like the songs I wrote\u201d alluding to her RIAA diamond-certified holiday hit \u201cAll I Want for Christmas is You\u201d and \u201cOh, yes, I want someone to rescue me\u201d pointing to the chorus of her 1993 Hot 100-topper \u201cDream Lover.\u201d \u201cType Dangerous\u201d became Mimi\u2019s landmark<\/a> 50th Hot 100 hit and first No. 1<\/a> on Adult R&B Airplay<\/a> in nearly two decades and already won an award for best R&B at this year\u2019s VMAs, giving Carey the props she knows she deserves.<\/p>\n When Carey first teased the album<\/a> at an Apple Music event in July, she told Ebro Darden, \u201cWe got some Mariah ballads.\u201d And the Here For It All title track certainly fits the bill. Clocking in at six minutes and 38 seconds, \u201cHere For It All\u201d earnestly lays out how love ain\u2019t easy but the difficulties aren\u2019t deterring Carey over a stirring piano melody that morphs into a soaring gospel ode that keeps the praise train of the previous track, \u201cJesus I Do,\u201d chugging. \u201cHere for It All\u201d ends the album on a high note, but it doesn\u2019t quite carry the emotional weight of \u201cNothing Is Impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n Carey gave the Lambs a taste of what\u2019s to come on the album this summer with the \u201cSugar Sweet\u201d single, and it had them licking their fingers. Her \u201cI\u2019ma keep it nice, nice, n\u0435at, neat, sugar, sugar, sweet, sweet\u201d hook is sticky, while Kehlani and Shenseea sprinkle in some sensuality (\u201cYou make me melt like candy\/ Only you can make it drip that kinda way,\u201d the former sings in her verse) and add a dash of dancehall flair to make \u201cSugar Sweet\u201d a real treat.<\/p>\n Carey gets her groove back on \u201cI Won\u2019t Allow It,\u201d a disco kiss-off about a narcissistic ex who tried to gain from her fame. Filled with hilarious one-liners like \u201cCan\u2019t obtain any Accutane\/ Should\u2019ve been more proactiiiiiive,\u201d \u201cI Won\u2019t Allow It\u201d is perfect for spinning around the roller rink with your new beau as your ex enviously watches from the sidelines.<\/p>\n \u201cNothing Is Impossible\u201d serves as Carey\u2019s ultimate love letter to herself. The downtempo ballad finds Carey at her most vulnerable on the album, reflecting on \u201clong harrowing nights\u201d that haunt her and a \u201cgreater dream\u201d that speaks to her indefatigability while the steady drum beat and swelling string arrangement further drive the point home. After she bore it all on her 2020 memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey<\/a>, and endured more recent trials and tribulations like losing her mother Patricia and sister Alison<\/a> on the same day last August, she stands firmer than ever in her purpose in this next chapter of her life.
