LaKeith Stanfield is returning to his music roots <\/a>with the release of his new single, \u201cFast Life,\u201d featuring Kid Cudi. The record and accompanying video mark his official Def Jam debut <\/a>and pave the way for his long-awaited new album (slated to be \u201ccoming soon\u201d).<\/p>\n Of the record, Stanfield told VIBE, \u201cI originally wrote and recorded this song about 7 years ago. My life was turbulent, exciting, and sad. This song explores that feeling in my journey.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cFast Life\u201d is somewhat of an introspective look<\/a> into his life when \u201cthings started popping off\u201d for Stanfield. He explained, \u201cIt was just like a barrage of different things coming from different directions [and] I didn\u2019t really know how to deal with it. It was a lot of money, a lot of fame, a lot of accolades coming at once. I went from anonymity to n****s running up on me, like, \u2018What\u2019s up, Get Out<\/a>?’\u201d<\/p>\n The adjustment ultimately ended with a stint in rehab<\/a>, and now, Stanfield feels the journey has been \u201csurreal\u201d considering he\u2019s been able to \u201cturn that negativity into something positive.\u201d The latter is what he intends to do with his music, noting, \u201cI want to alchemize and make the negative stuff, give birth to something a little bit more positive.\u201d<\/p>\n During a private screening back in August, the acclaimed actor revealed that music was actually his first love. \u201cI\u2019ve been doing it since I was 11. I\u2019ve always loved music,\u201d he explained before confessing that when he\u2019s traveling, filming, or in the in-between, he\u2019s always working on his music.<\/p>\n Stanfield teased, \u201cI rap, I sing, I scream until I don\u2019t have a voice,\u201d and with \u201cFast Life,\u201d he feels, \u201cIt\u2019s time to share, it\u2019s time to let it out.\u201d<\/p>\n Described as \u201chypnotic as it is hedonistic,\u201d the visual is a short film directed by Jeymes Samuel (The Harder They Fall<\/a>, The Book of Clarence) with narration by Taraji P. Henson <\/a>and cameos from Madeline Brewer, John Boyega, David Oyelowo, Jimmy Akingbola, and Stanfield\u2019s wife, Kasmere<\/a>.<\/p>\n On his synergy with Samuel, Stanfield labeled it \u201cweird in a beautiful way.\u201d<\/p>\n He shared, \u201c[He] just has a great imagination. And he was just like, \u2018How do we take it to the next level? How do we lather it in some elements of creepiness, and embed some deeper meaning?\u2019 I had a really great time when I\u2019m working on \u2018The Harder They Fall,\u2019 \u2018The Book of Clarence<\/a>.\u2019 So I just asked him would he come on to this, and he was like, \u2018Yeah.\u2019 So, we just ran with it.\u201d<\/p>\n Stanfield also spoke about his friendship with Cudi and how the rapper ended up on the record. He considered Cudi to be a \u201cgreat man and gracious artist<\/a>,\u201d adding, \u201cHe and I both speak out hearts \u2014 so I approached him with the record when revisiting it for official release. I\u2019m grateful he joined me.\u201d<\/p>\n He later confessed that Cudi had a \u201cmagnetism toward [\u2018Fast Life\u2019]\u201d and joked that he \u201cdid that verse in five [minutes].\u201d Stanfield quipped, \u201cI\u2019ve never seen no s**t like that in my life [\u2026] He just hummed three different tunes. And he was like, \u2018Yeah, all right, cool. You know I\u2019m going to do this quick, right?\u2019 And in five minutes, he was done [\u2026] I didn\u2019t believe it at first. Then, I sat with it, and it\u2019s one of the most beautiful aspects of the album now.\u201d<\/p>\n This first iteration of his music is \u201call about getting through the hard s**t,\u201d with Stanfield explaining: \u201cWhen you can reflect, there\u2019s a certain beauty to the struggle<\/a>, and I talk about that in this first installation. As I move forward, I just grow and I progress [\u2026] And you coming with me on the journey because we all live a fast life.
