The superhero genre has taken a hit at the box office in recent years, but if anyone could bring it back from near death, it would be Robert Downey Jr.<\/strong><\/a>, at least according to Iron Man 3 director Shane Black<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n Speaking with ComicBook.com to promote his new movie, Play Dirty, Black shared his thoughts on Downey\u2019s casting as Doctor Doom<\/a>, admitting that he was just as skeptical as the fans were when Marvel Studios<\/a> first announced it, but has since come around to the idea. \u201cI think he\u2019s going to singlehandedly reinvigorate the entire comic book movie industry with that,\u201d Black boldly claimed.<\/p>\n \u201cI mean, it seemed like at first a cynical idea, you know, \u2018Oh, let\u2019s just go back to the well of the one guy that seems to always save us.\u2019 But it\u2019s going to work. It\u2019s really going to work. And he\u2019s brought to it\u2026 I\u2019m not at liberty to say anything, not that I know. I\u2019m thrilled because I\u2019m first in line to see that. I haven\u2019t seen all the Marvel movies. I\u2019ll see that one first,\u201d the director added.<\/p>\n Downey was arguably the face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe<\/a> for its first 10 years, with his performance as Tony Stark\/Iron Man creating millions of fans. His MCU return in Avengers: Doomsday<\/a>, even while in a new role, will likely bring back some fans who haven\u2019t kept up with the franchise since his departure, which Marvel Studios is likely banking on.<\/p>\n Avengers: Doomsday recently wrapped principal photography earlier this month, but is expected to undergo additional filming before the movie\u2019s release in theaters on December 18, 2026.
