It\u2019s no secret we here at Country Living love Nancy Meyers. Beyond the heartwarming plots and lovable characters, her movies are notoriously full of interior design eye-candy. To get to the bottom of what makes her homes so inviting, I spoke with Academy Award-nominated set decorator Beth Rubino<\/a>, who worked on three of Nancy\u2019s movies\u2014Something\u2019s Gotta Give<\/a>, It\u2019s Complicated<\/a>, and What Women Want<\/a>. Below, she shares her one secret to creating Nancy\u2019s dreamiest rooms.<\/p>\n Nancy Meyers\u2019 movie sets are undoubtedly visual masterpieces\u2014living rooms with sumptuous sofas and happily hodgepodge kitchens make them real and lived-in, almost as if you\u2019re just hanging out at your friend\u2019s house. Much of that comes down to their color and how it makes you feel\u2014never overwhelmed, always welcome. \u201cThe choice of palettes is about complementing all the choices in the room,\u201d says set decorator Beth Rubino. It\u2019s about building what she\u2019s dubbed a \u201cquite supportive backdrop.\u201d<\/p>\n To build that backdrop, Beth, Nancy, and production designer Jon Hutman<\/a> have almost exclusively used creamy color palettes. The custom paint colors are \u201cgenerally subtle and beautiful,\u201d says Beth, and were specifically chosen based on how they would interact with other decorating choices in the room such as fabrics, window treatments, antique wood pieces, and rugs.<\/p>\n Another big factor? The illusion of natural light. \u201cNancy\u2019s houses always have a great sense of light,\u201d says Beth. Like any good decorator, Beth and Nancy know that a room\u2019s lighting is the most important make-it-or-break-it factor.<\/p>\n The breezy tones of the It\u2019s Complicated kitchen represent the cozy, welcoming vibe that Beth says is inherent in the work she and Nancy do together.<\/span> Universal Pictures<\/span><\/p>\n While Beth was reluctant to share exact paint shades\u2014\u201cfor years people have asked what paints were used,\u201d she explained, but \u201cthe colors used are film-friendly, meaning they are different to the naked eye”\u2014she did recommend starting with neutrals from one of her three go-to brands: Benjamin Moore<\/a>, Farrow & Ball<\/a>, or Donald Kaufman Color<\/a>.
