Matt Selman<\/a>, co-showrunner for The Simpsons<\/a><\/em>, recently opened up about the show\u2019s approach to covering politics and the return of Jimmy Kimmel Live!<\/em><\/a> to ABC<\/a> after its six-day suspension.<\/p>\n For an Entertainment Weekly<\/a> article published on Sunday, September 28, Selman explained that covering the U.S. political landscape on The Simpsons<\/em> is a bit different from late-night talk shows and even South Park<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen you write a show that doesn\u2019t come out until 10 months after you write it, it kind of takes the pressure off, because who knows what the f\u2014 we\u2019re gonna be looking at in 10 months,\u201d he pointed out. \u201cSo like, South Park<\/em>, they make their show in a week, and even\u00a0they<\/em>\u00a0can\u2019t stay up to date on things. More crazy s\u2014 goes down faster than even\u00a0they<\/em> can do it.\u201d<\/p>\n Selman also mentioned Jimmy Kimmel<\/a>\u2018s show getting pulled \u201cindefinitely\u201d<\/a> following his remarks about the death of Charlie Kirk<\/a>. The conservative activist and Turning Point USA founder, 31, was fatally shot while speaking at Utah Valley University<\/a> on September 10.<\/p>\n \u201cJimmy Kimmel\u2019s great, and I\u2019m glad he is back on TV,\u201d Selman told EW. \u201cCensorship sucks. What can I say? Censorship sucks.\u201d<\/p>\n During Kimmel\u2019s September 15 monologue, the late-night host said, \u201cWe had some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and with everything they can to score political points from it.\u201d After suspending the late-night show on September 17, ABC reinstated it, and Kimmel made his record-breaking return on September 23.<\/p>\n Of The Simpsons<\/em>\u2018 approach to covering politics, he explained, \u201cIt\u2019s not our mission statement to respond to the crisis of the moment. It\u2019s more about a town of good-natured dum-dums dealing with a changing world, yet our characters never really change. The world changes around them.\u201d<\/p>\n Season 37 of The Simpsons<\/em><\/a> premieres on Sunday, September 28, at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.<\/p>\n
