The injury zapped his effectiveness and left him scrambling to maintain his optimal level of production.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>As his shoulder healed, though, Ragans began to feel healthy again. The zip on his fastball returned \u2014 touching 98 mph at times \u2014 and the strikeouts followed. Since returning from injury, he allowed four earned runs and registered 22 strikeouts.<\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The Royals continued to monitor his workload. Ragans maxed out at 72 pitches in his previous two outings \u2014 each offering various degrees of success.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Ragans looked sharp in the Royals\u2019 regular-season finale against the Athletics. He tossed 4 1\/3 scoreless innings while recording eight strikeouts. Per Baseball Savant, he <a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow\" href=\"https:\/\/baseballsavant.mlb.com\/gamefeed?date=9%2F28%2F2025&amp;gamePk=776138&amp;chartType=pitch&amp;legendType=pitchName&amp;playerType=pitcher&amp;inning=&amp;count=&amp;pitchHand=&amp;batSide=&amp;descFilter=&amp;ptFilter=&amp;resultFilter=&amp;hf=playerBreakdown&amp;sportId=1&amp;liveAb=#776138\">generated 41 swings and 17 whiffs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe biggest thing is health,\u201d Ragans said. \u201cThat\u2019s all we are focusing on, you know. This year hasn\u2019t gone the way we wanted to, in terms of that. (It\u2019s important) going into this offseason healthy and on a good note.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The Royals beat the Athletics 9-2 in Ragans\u2019 start on Sunday. The victory secured a second consecutive winning season at 82-80 overall. KC last finished with a winning record in multiple years from 2013-15.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s bittersweet, right,\u201d Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. \u201cIt\u2019s good to win the last game, but this isn\u2019t the last game we\u2019re trying to win. So proud of the guys. I mean, there were a lot of great things out there. Ragans being one of them. He is signed long-term and will likely be their opening-day starter in 2026. His ability to anchor the rotation \u2014 which also includes Seth Lugo, Michael Wacha, Kris Bubic, Noah Cameron and others \u2014 will be paramount in helping KC return to the postseason.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wants to be out there no matter what,\u201d Royals star Bobby Witt Jr. said. \u201cNo matter what the situation is, he wants to go out there and compete and pitch well. That\u2019s what he does every time he\u2019s out there. So, it\u2019s great to see him back out there and kind of set us up for a win today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>There shouldn\u2019t be many lingering concerns about Ragans. In his final starts of 2025, he showed elevated velocity and the ability to pitch without any discomfort. He will have a normal offseason and be penciled in to make at least 25-30 starts next season.<\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s amazing,\u201d Royals catcher Carter Jensen said. \u201cI think everybody knows that he\u2019s one of the best pitchers in this league. So credit to him. I\u2019m just pressing buttons and giving suggestions back there. So, it was super fun to catch. You know, someone with that much confidence on the mound and good stuff to back it up \u2014 it\u2019s always good fun to watch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Sunday\u2019s effort gave the Royals additional reassurance. Ragans has returned to his ace status and cleared every benchmark in his re-ascension atop the rotation.<\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"h2\">Royals\u2019 offense finishes strong<\/h2>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The Royals were plagued with an inconsistent offense this season.<\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>At times they could <a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kansascity.com\/sports\/mlb\/kansas-city-royals\/article312184051.html\">score double-digit runs with ease<\/a>. There were also tough spells during which the KC bats just couldn\u2019t get anything going.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, the Royals took care of business early against the Athletics\u2019 bullpen. But KC was also gifted a run in the second inning. Athletics outfielder JJ Bleday misplayed a ball that rolled past him to the right-field wall.<\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>That led to Maikel Garcia recording a sacrifice fly for an early Royals lead. Garcia also hit an RBI single in the fourth inning. He and second baseman Michael Massey each had two RBIs in the game.<\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Later, the Royals relied on a power barrage.<\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Mike Yastrzemski and Jensen hit consecutive homers in the seventh inning. Witt capped the frame with a two-run double.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Jensen\u2019s blast traveled 482 feet over the right-field wall. It\u2019s the <a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MLBPipeline\/status\/1972408659188859130\">longest Royals home run in the Statcast Era<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what my zone is and I know what pitches I can do damage on,\u201d Jensen said. \u201cSo that one was in the zone and didn\u2019t try to do too much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Yastrzemski finished with two homers Sunday afternoon. It was his first two-homer game since June 19, 2023, when he played for the San Francisco Giants.<\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><!----><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The Royals logged 15 hits in the regular-season finale.
