{"id":2056752,"date":"2025-09-29T04:39:08","date_gmt":"2025-09-29T04:39:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2056752"},"modified":"2025-09-29T04:39:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-29T04:39:08","slug":"a2-jazz-fest-2025-offers-entertainment-mentorship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/a2-jazz-fest-2025-offers-entertainment-mentorship\/","title":{"rendered":"A2 Jazz Fest 2025 offers entertainment, mentorship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>On Saturday, Indiana University<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/music.indiana.edu\/index.html\"> Jacobs School of Music<\/a>\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/music.indiana.edu\/degrees-programs\/ensembles\/index.html\">Student Jazz Ensemble<\/a>\u2019s music echoed through the halls of the<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fccannarbor.org\/\"> First Congregational Church of Ann Arbor<\/a>, marking the start of the two-day-long<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/a2jazzfest.com\/\"> 2025 A2 Jazz Fest<\/a>. The event, held at multiple venues, was free to the public and consisted mostly of Michigan-based jazz musicians and groups.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 2016, the jazz fest aims to celebrate the Ann Arbor jazz community and help cultivate musical education. On Saturday, Sean Dobbins, Jacobs School of Music music professor, led a free student workshop with help from bassist and Michigan State University junior <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.laurasimonemusic.com\/\">Laura-Simone Martin<\/a>. On Sunday, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.robbickleymusic.com\/about-1\">Rob Bickley<\/a>, Ann Arbor jazz musician and private music lesson teacher, led a second student workshop. Those who attended either workshop could perform what they learned in front of a live audience.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with The Michigan Daily before the festival, Dave Sharp, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bluellamaclub.com\/\">Blue LLama Jazz Club<\/a> artistic director and A2 Jazz Fest founder, said their team strives for community-based educational opportunities and giving people the chance to perform in front of a live audience.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m looking forward to continuing the educational programs and involving more (members of) community of all ages,\u201d Sharp said. \u201cI\u2019m also looking forward to giving groups an opportunity to play to a living audience. Which is kind of one of the main things we try to do \u2014 to have it be where people are listening to the music and it\u2019s not in the corner, it\u2019s not a background thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>The First Congregational Church of Ann Arbor hosted the student workshop and the first three performances of the A2 Jazz Fest: the student ensemble from Jacobs School of Music, the Laura-Simone Quartet and the<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.annarbormusicians.com\/directory\/Rick%20Roe%20Trio\"> Rick Roe Trio<\/a>. The rest of the Saturday night performances, the<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kenjilee.net\/bio\"> Kenji Lee<\/a> Fortune-Teller Quartet, the<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ayasekine.net\/about-5\"> Aya Sekine<\/a> Group and<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bluellamaclub.com\/event\/arnold-jassi-kramer-world-transcendance\/\"> Arnold\/Jassi\/Kramer<\/a> were held at<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theravensclub.com\/\"> The Ravens Club<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, the<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jeffhaasmusic.com\/jeff-haas-quintet\"> Jeff Haas Quintet<\/a> and<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theocroker.com\/\"> Theo Croker<\/a> played at the church, while<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jessekramerdrums.com\/bio\"> Jesse Kramer<\/a>, a local Ann Arbor musician, closed the festival with a jam session at the Ravens Club.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with The Daily, Martin said she first learned about the festival through\u00a0 fellow musician<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kennedy-center.org\/artists\/r\/ra-rn\/redwood\/\"> REDWOOD<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy freshman year I had a gig here, in Kerrytown,\u201d Martin said. \u201cMy friend and pianist, REDWOOD, had her band and she called me for it and that\u2019s when I met everybody here at A2 and I was like, \u2018Wow, that\u2019s so cool. I would love to play here!\u2019 And now, two years later, I\u2019m lucky enough to headline.\u201d\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Martin said community is fundamental to jazz.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-2    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cJazz<em> <\/em>is community, really,\u201d Martin said. \u201cIt\u2019s all an oral tradition that\u2019s only possible by learning from others and teaching people and passing it on. This music wouldn\u2019t even be a thing if there wasn\u2019t a community,\u00a0 and there wasn\u2019t that communal yearning for growth and expressing yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin said serving as a mentor to youth interested in music, both in an internship and at the A2 Jazz Fest, was incredibly rewarding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s honestly inspiring, because just a couple years ago I was in their exact shoes,\u201d Martin said. \u201cSo it\u2019s cool to now be on the other side and help them and encourage them. Like I said before, that\u2019s what jazz is all about. Each one, teach one. Passing on everything that you learn and everything your teachers told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Engineering sophomore Alain Zhou decided to attend the festival after walking by the church. Zhou told The Daily he enjoyed watching the mentorship from professional music educators during the student workshop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think this music event is different because there were the workshops,\u201d Zhou said. \u201cIt was interesting to see the professor interacting with the students and giving pointers, and also it\u2019s a way for non-jazz listeners to understand a little bit more. It\u2019s not just the students who are learning, but also the audience learning with the students.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-3    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>In an interview with The Daily, Anna Gersh, administrative director of the A2 Jazz Fest, said the A2 Jazz team has been working to enhance their educational offerings by forming partnerships with the Ann Arbor<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hocm.org\/about-us\/\"> Hands-On Museum<\/a>, the<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/michiganfirehousemuseum.org\/\"> Michigan Firehouse Museum<\/a> and the<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.refugiafestival.com\/\"> Refugia Festival<\/a>.
