{"id":2056874,"date":"2025-09-29T07:29:25","date_gmt":"2025-09-29T07:29:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2056874"},"modified":"2025-09-29T07:29:25","modified_gmt":"2025-09-29T07:29:25","slug":"bjork-becomes-latest-artist-to-join-no-music-for-genocide-israel-boycott","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/bjork-becomes-latest-artist-to-join-no-music-for-genocide-israel-boycott\/","title":{"rendered":"Bj\u00f6rk becomes latest artist to join \u2018No Music For Genocide\u2019 Israel boycott"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\n         Published on<br \/>\n            <time datetime=\"2025-09-29 09:27:29 +02:00\">29\/09\/2025 &#8211; 9:27 GMT+2<\/time>\n            <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"--widget_related_list_trans: 'Related';\">\n<div class=\"c-ad u-show-for-mobile-only\">\n<div class=\"c-ad__placeholder\">\n          <br \/>\n          <span>ADVERTISEMENT<\/span>\n        <\/div><\/div>\n<p>Icelandic music legend Bj\u00f6rk has become the latest artist to join the \u2018No Music For Genocide\u2019 campaign, meaning that her catalog is now geo-blocked on Israeli streaming services.<\/p>\n<p>As we <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2025\/09\/19\/massive-attack-pull-their-music-from-spotify-and-platforms-in-israel\"><strong>reported last week<\/strong><\/a>, the new campaign is a cultural boycott initiative which encourages artists and rights-holders to pull their music from streaming platforms in Israel, in response to the ongoing crisis\u00a0in Gaza. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More than 400 artists, including <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2025\/09\/19\/massive-attack-pull-their-music-from-spotify-and-platforms-in-israel\"><strong>Massive Attack<\/strong><\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2025\/07\/03\/fontaines-dc-bring-pro-palestine-group-on-stage-at-roskilde-festival-in-denmark\"><strong>Fontaines D.C.<\/strong><\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2023\/12\/16\/red-moons-guts-and-diamonds-here-are-the-best-albums-of-2023\"><strong>Paramore<\/strong><\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2025\/08\/11\/kneecap-banned-in-hungary-but-vow-to-use-their-platform-to-call-out-genocide-and-the-war-c\"><strong>Kneecap<\/strong><\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2023\/12\/16\/red-moons-guts-and-diamonds-here-are-the-best-albums-of-2023\"><strong>Wednesday<\/strong><\/a>, have joined \u2018No Music For Genocide\u2019, with each involved\u00a0sending geo-block requests to their distributor or label.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They are encouraging major label groups like Sony, UMG and Warner to follow suit, especially since they blocked their entire music catalogues in Russia a month into their invasion of Ukraine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A statement from \u2018<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nomusicforgenocide.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\"><strong>No Music For Genocide<\/strong><\/a>\u2019 stated: \u201cCulture can\u2019t stop bombs on its own, but it can help reject political repression, shift public opinion toward justice, and refuse the art-washing and normalization of any company or nation that commits crimes against humanity.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis initiative is one part of a worldwide movement to erode the support Israel needs to continue its genocide. We\u2019re inspired by the escalating efforts in pursuit of that goal, from the recent Film Workers For Palestine pledge to Spain\u2019s ban of Israel-bound ships and planes to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition to Demilitarize Brooklyn Navy Yard to dockworkers in Morocco who\u2019ve refused to load weapons onto vessels ordered by Tel Aviv.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The statement adds: \u201cMany of our peers have felt, like ourselves, unsure how to use music in this moment. Our first goal with No Music For Genocide is to inspire others to reclaim their agency and direct their influence toward a tangible act. We are so grateful for all of the artists, managers and labels who have already committed to this first step, and we\u2019re excited to expand this together. The more of us there are, the stronger we will be. This is just the beginning.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bj\u00f6rk has yet to issue a statement about her participation in the Israel boycott but has been outspoken in her advocacy for the Palestinian people in the past. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In November 2023, she posted a series of maps of the Israel-Palestine region since 1946, writing: \u201cIs this what you call sharing?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The singer has also been <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2025\/01\/27\/universal-music-group-and-spotify-sign-new-deal-as-bjork-slams-streaming-company\"><strong>outspoken regarding the streaming service Spotify<\/strong><\/a>, calling it \u201cprobably the worst thing that has happened to musicians.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Speaking\u00a0to Swedish outlet Dagens Nyheter, she discussed her preference for creating new music over touring. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe live part is, and always will be, a big part of what I do,\u201d she said, adding: \u201cI\u2019m lucky because I no longer have to raise money on touring, which younger musicians are often forced to do.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn that respect,\u201d she continued, \u201cSpotify is probably the worst thing that has happened to musicians.
