Over the summer, Foster + Partners<\/a> were chosen as the firm to create the national memorial for Queen Elizabeth II<\/a> in St James\u2019s Park. Their design features a glass bridge, inspired by the Queen Mary Fringe tiara<\/a> worn by the late Queen on her wedding day, alongside a statue of Her late Majesty to be crafted by British sculptor Martin Jennings.\n<\/p>\n Many have already seen some of Jennings\u2019 work as he is known for\u00a0creating a bust of the Queen Mother in St Paul\u2019s Cathedral and the first crowned coinage portrait of Charles III.<\/p>\n He has also crafted statues of prominent figures such as Philip Larkin in Hull, Mary Seacole in London\u2019s St Thomas\u2019 Hospital, and the \u2018Women of Steel\u2019 in Sheffield.\n<\/p>\n A recommendation for the final sculpture will be put to The King and the British Prime Minister next year, alongside proposals for the wider memorial site.<\/p>\n In an interview with the PA News Agency<\/em>, Jennings said the design is still at an early stage saying: \u2018intentionally it was planned that there would be discussions about how to represent her. I was appointed more on the basis of my past work than in response to a particular design. I will be going through a period of listening \u2013 not only to invested organisations and individuals, but also taking the temperature of how the populace at large might want to see this representation.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n Jennings reflected on precedents such as the Victoria Memorial near Buckingham Palace and the\u00a0George VI and Queen Elizabeth memorial on The Mall, but emphasised his wish to create something distinctly modern: \u2018I would like to make something that has clearly been made now. I don\u2019t want to make something that could be mistaken as having been put up 150 years ago or even 50 years ago.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n The sculptor noted the statue should reflect both the longevity of the Queen\u2019s reign and the contemporary moment in which it is being created.<\/p>\n \nCommittee Chair Robin Janvrin said: \u2018On behalf of the Committee I am delighted that we have selected Martin Jennings to create the Queen Elizabeth sculpture. We felt he had a very sensitive understanding of the significance of this unique commission and we were impressed by Martin\u2019s previous work and his ability to capture the essence of character in public works of art.
