J.K. Rowling has publicly responded to Emma Watson after the \u201cHarry Potter\u201d actor spoke out about their relationship and disagreements on gender identity.<\/p>\n
Watson appeared on the Jay Shetty Podcast<\/a> last week where she reflected on their relationship, stating that she still loves the author and refuses to \u201ccancel her out\u201d despite their conflicting views.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s my deepest wish that I hope people who don\u2019t agree with my opinion will love me, and I hope I can keep loving people who I don\u2019t necessarily share the same opinion with,\u201d Watson said. \u201cAnd I think that\u2019s a very very important way for me that I need to be able to move through life.\u201d<\/p>\n After hearing these comments, Rowling took to X<\/a> on Monday to post a lengthy condemnation of the actor and co-star Daniel Radcliffe for assuming a \u201cde facto\u201d role as spokespeople for the world she created.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m not owed eternal agreement from any actor who once played a character I created,\u201d she wrote. \u201cThe idea is as ludicrous as me checking with the boss I had when I was twenty-one for what opinions I should hold these days.\u201d<\/p>\n Rowling then targeted Watson\u2019s upbringing and wealth claiming that she \u201chas so little experience in real life\u201d and that \u201cshe\u2019s ignorant of how ignorant she is.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cShe\u2019ll never need a homeless shelter. She\u2019s never going to be placed on a mixed sex public hospital ward…,\u201d Rowling wrote. \u201cI wasn\u2019t a multimillionaire at fourteen. I lived in poverty while writing the book that made Emma famous,\u201d Rowling wrote, arguing her life experience gives her a clearer view of what \u201cthe trashing of women\u2019s rights in which Emma has so enthusiastically participated means to women and girls without her privileges.\u201d<\/p>\n The tensions stem from comments Rowling made in 2020, when she was accused of transphobia after criticizing an article\u2019s headline: \u201cOpinion: Creating a more equal post-COVID-19 world for people who menstruate.\u201d Rowling wrote \u201c\u2018People who menstruate.\u2019 I\u2019m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?\u201d<\/p>\n Both Watson, who played J.K. Rowling\u2019s character Hermione Granger in films of the books, and Radcliffe then publicly distanced themselves<\/a> from the author at the time.<\/p>\n Radcliffe stated: \u201cTransgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations.\u201d<\/p>\n Watson wrote, \u201cTrans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren\u2019t who they say they are.\u201d<\/p>\n Despite their rift, Watson said in the recent interview that she will still \u201ctreasure Jo\u201d and praised Rowling for her past \u201ckindness and words of encouragement.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI just don\u2019t know what else to do other than hold these two seemingly incompatible things together at the same time and just hope maybe they will one day resolve or co-join themselves, and maybe accept that they never will, but that they can both still be true.\u201d<\/p>\n Read the original article on MassLive<\/a>.
