After nearly three decades away from live-action films, Rick Moranis is back \u2014 and he\u2019s suiting up again for Spaceballs.<\/p>\n
Amazon MGM Studios confirmed Thursday that Spaceballs 2 is officially in production, reuniting Moranis with director, writer, and comedy legend Mel Brooks. The sequel will also see the return of Daphne Zuniga, Bill Pullman, and George Wyner from the original 1987 cult classic.<\/p>\n
Joining them this time are Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Anthony Carrigan, all playing new characters whose roles are still under wraps. Brooks himself, now 99, is not just producing but stepping back on screen.<\/p>\n
The studio even released a cast photo from the table read, cheekily titled \u201cSpaceballs The Table Read,\u201d parodying the famous Star Wars table read photo from 2014.<\/p>\n
Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) is directing, with Gad co-writing the script alongside Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. Story details are being tightly guarded, or as the press release put it, hidden \u201cunder lock, key, and an industrial-strength Schwartz shield.\u201d<\/p>\n
For Moranis, who last appeared in a live-action role in 1997\u2019s Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves, the sequel marks a long-awaited return that fans have been hoping for since the original film became a VHS-era staple. While he\u2019s done occasional voice acting in the years since, this is the first time audiences will see him back in a major live-action comedy.<\/p>\n
Brooks teased the project back in June with a characteristically cheeky video announcement: \u201cAfter 40 years, we asked, \u2018What do the fans want?\u2019 But, instead, we\u2019re making this movie. May the Schwartz be with you!\u201d<\/p>\n
No release date has been set yet, but with the cast assembled and cameras rolling, the long-rumored sequel is finally a thing.<\/p>\n
