Sylvan Esso<\/a> have returned with the duo\u2019s first new single in three years, \u201cWDID.\u201d It\u2019s their first song on their own record label, Psychic Hotline. Listen to it below.<\/p>\n The new song arrives with more news from the band, as they\u2019ve announced that they\u2019re taking their music off the Spotify streaming platform.<\/p>\n \u201cAs we prepare to release new music, we have to decide what we want to be a part of and what we don\u2019t,\u201d band members Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn shared in a press statement. \u201cTo that end, with Sylvan Esso being on our own label for the first time, we have decided to remove our music from Spotify. While no solution is perfect, we simply can\u2019t continue to put our life\u2019s work in a store that, in addition to all its other glaring flaws, directly funds war machines.\u201d<\/p>\n Sylvan Esso is the latest in a line of artists, including King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard<\/a>, Xiu Xiu<\/a>, and Deerhoof<\/a>, who\u2019ve left Spotify in response to the company\u2019s CEO, Daniel Ek, investing in the AI weapons company Helsing.<\/p>\n Related Video<\/p>\n \u201cWDID\u201d was recorded at Sylvan Esso\u2019s own studio in Chapel Hill, NC, Betty\u2019s, with additional production from Jake Luppen. The song arrives with visuals by artists Aaron Anderson and Eric Timothy Carlson. The aggressive track charges forward on an abrasive energy that borderlines on industrial, with vocalist Meath asking the existential question, <\/span>\u201cWhat do I do when I run out of money?\u201d and the \u201calgorithm only wants my body.\u201d<\/p>\n The new single will also be released as a physical 12-inch single on January 9th, backed by a \u201cloose and hypnotic\u201d b-side titled \u201cKEEP ON,\u201d which was built from a week of improvisation alongside bassist Daniel Aged and drummer TJ Maiani.
