Madonna<\/strong><\/a> is recalling a dark time in her life while navigating a custody battle with Guy Ritchie.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThere were moments in my life where I wanted to cut my arms off. I actually contemplated suicide,\u201d Madonna, 67, shared on the Monday, September 29, episode of the \u201cOn Purpose With Jay Shetty\u201d<\/a> podcast. \u201cThat probably sounds really weird coming from me because I\u2019m not that emo, you know what I mean? But I was like, \u2018I can\u2019t take this pain anymore.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cBut as soon as you understand that what is happening to you is a challenge that you are karmically meant to experience and learn from and evolve to a higher level of consciousness, then you can look at that event, that experience, as a lesson and not punishment.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked what might have stirred her suicidal thoughts, Madonna shared, \u201cI\u2019m not in the blame game. I used to be that way.\u201d Madonna admitted that she wanted to \u201cseek revenge\u201d or would \u201cpronounce loudly\u201d that someone would get karma.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMadonna shared a touching tribute to son Rocco Ritchie on his 24th birthday alongside some rare photos of her eldest boy. \u201cHAPPY BIRTHDAY ROCCO \u2014 the long and Winding Road through all your many moods and incarnations has been tumultuous and full of surprises,\u201d Madonna, 65, wrote via Instagram on Sunday, August 11, alongside an [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI would say probably one of the most painful moments in my life where I honestly couldn\u2019t see the forest for the trees was when I went through a custody battle [over] my son,\u201d she said. \u201cEven though my marriage didn\u2019t work out \u2014 I mean, a lot of people\u2019s marriages don\u2019t work out, they marry the wrong people, they\u2019re not aligned, they\u2019re not meant for each other \u2014 [but] someone trying to take my child away from me was like, they might as well just kill me. That\u2019s really how I was thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cI was on tour at the time. So I had to go on stage every night. I would just be lying on the floor of my dressing room sobbing. I really thought it was the end of the world. I couldn\u2019t take it. I just couldn\u2019t take it. But thank God I don\u2019t feel that way anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

Madonna and Ritchie, now 57, welcomed son Rocco in 2000 before tying the knot later that year. The couple went on to adopt son David Banda after going on a humanitarian trip to Malawi in 2006. Madonna and Ritchie had to wait two years for the Malawi High Court to approve the adoption, meaning David Banda was 3 when the pair officially became his parents<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In 2008, Madonna and Ritchie split and cited \u201cirreconcilable differences\u201d as the reason for calling it quits. After the duo\u2019s divorce was settled later that year, Madonna adopted Mercy \u2014 who was also born in Malawi \u2014 in 2009. (Madonna is also mom to daughter Lourdes Leon, whom she welcomed in 1996 with then-partner Carlos Leon<\/strong>, and twin daughters Stella and Estere, whom she adopted<\/a> in 2017.)<\/p>\n

While discussing her biggest hurdles in life, Madonna recalled suffering from a \u201cbacterial infection\u201d<\/a> in 2023 while rehearsing for a tour.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne minute I was alive and dancing around and the next minute I was in the ICU unit of a hospital and I woke up from being unconscious for four days,\u201d Madonna said. \u201cI got out of the hospital, they took me off of the ventilator. I started to breathe on my own, and I had something, it\u2019s called sepsis, and it can kill you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mayo Clinic defines sepsis as a serious condition where the body cannot properly respond to an infection, leading the organs to work poorly.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody recovers at a different rate. I\u2019ve always seen myself as superwoman,\u201d she said. \u201cSo, I was like, \u2018Oh, I\u2019m going to kick this. I\u2019m going to be good. I\u2019m getting back into rehearsals.\u2019 I had no strength. I had no energy. I couldn\u2019t get out of bed and I didn\u2019t know when it was going to end.\u201d<\/p>\n
