However, with the exception of Jeff Bridges reprising Kevin Flynn (or at least something that looks like him)<\/a>, none of the other actors from Legacy are returning for this new installment. Now Garrett Hedlund, who played Sam Flynn, has broken his silence about his absence following the Ares director\u2019s claims about why certain actors didn\u2019t come back.<\/p>\n Earlier this month, director Joachim R\u00f8nning alleged to Collider<\/a> that part of the reason certain Tron: Legacy character aren\u2019t back for Tron: Ares is because \u201cthese things are not only creative choices; sometimes actors don’t want to be in it anymore.\u201d R\u00f8nning never outright named Hedlund, but considering that Sam was Legacy\u2019s main protagonist, it\u2019s probably safe to say he\u2019s looped in that group. In a separate interview with Collider<\/a> at FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention, Hedlund had this to say when the subject was brought up:<\/p>\n Well, first, I can’t wait to watch what they did with this, what they did with Ares. I’m so proud of everybody involved. The producers on that are the same producers that brought Legacy to life, and they just worked their tail off on this one. And so, I’m going to be the first one in the door to go see [the movie], and the fans are very excited about it as well, and that’s a wonderful thing. There’s a lot of love for [Tron] out there.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n A statement like that seemingly indicates there\u2019s no hard feelings between Garrett Hedlund and the people running the Tron franchise. It would have been nice if he\u2019d confirmed if what Joachim R\u00f8nning previously said was accurate, and maybe he\u2019ll tell his side of the story after Tron: Ares has been released. For now, if we take Hedlund\u2019s quote at face value, then he\u2019s excited to see this upcoming Disney movie<\/a> like so many other people.<\/p>\n More about Tron: Ares<\/p>\n Ares looking back in Tron: Ares.<\/p>\n I Was Bummed Tron: Ares Wasn’t A Direct Sequel To Legacy, But The Producer’s Comments Give Me Hope It Could Still Happen<\/a><\/p>\n After Seeing Tron: Ares Footage At San Diego Comic-Con, I’m No Longer Worried About One Big Part Of The Movie<\/a><\/p>\n I\u2019d be lying if I said I still wasn\u2019t disappointed that Garrett Hedlund won\u2019t appear in Tron: Ares. At the end of Tron: Legacy, Sam Flynn escaped from The Grid with Quorra, the last surviving ISO (isomorphic algorithm). Sam intended to retake control of ENCOM and \u201cchange the world\u201d with Olivia Wilde\u2019s character. That\u2019s a pretty big plot thread to leave hanging, but alas, Wilde also isn\u2019t returning for Ares. Neither is Cillian Murphy, who cameoed in Legacy as Edward Dillinger, the son of David Warner\u2019s Edward Dillinger from the first Tron movie.<\/p>\n Instead, Tron: Ares functions as a standalone sequel that follows the super-intelligent program Ares, played by Jared Leto, being brought to the real world for a mission. The official Ares plot synopsis says this marks humanity\u2019s first encounter with A.I. beings, so it seems Quorra ended up keeping a low profile. The Dillinger family will still be represented through Evan Peters\u2019 Julian, Edward Sr.\u2019s grandson, and Gillian Anderson\u2019s Elisabeth, Julian\u2019s mother and Edward Sr.\u2019s daughter. Other cast members include Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasnan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan and Sarah Desjardins.<\/p>\n Tron: Ares opens in theaters on October 10.
