George Clooney says President Trump is \u201cnot wrong\u201d that movie productions are exiting Hollywood, but that the solution to luring them back lies in a federal tax rebate, not a tariff on foreign-made films.<\/p>\n
\u201cLook, he\u2019s not wrong about the idea that businesses have left Los Angeles. They have, and in droves,\u201d Clooney said in\u00a0an interview<\/a>\u00a0with The Associated Press at the New York Film Festival premiere of \u201cJay Kelly\u201d on Monday.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat we need is the\u2026 tax incentives that you get here in New York,\u201d the 64-year-old actor said.<\/p>\n \u201cThey\u2019re building studios here because there\u2019s so much work. We need those,\u201d the Academy Award winner said.<\/p>\n The comments from Clooney \u2014 a longtime supporter of Democratic candidates and a\u00a0Trump critic<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 came after the president had hours earlier\u00a0renewed his<\/a>\u00a0call to impose a 100 percent tariff on films made outside the U.S.<\/p>\n \u201cOur movie making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other Countries, just like stealing \u2018candy from a baby,\u2019\u201d Trump wrote in a social media post.<\/p>\n Clooney said rather than a tariff on foreign-made movies, a tax rebate would help the effort to encourage projects produced in the Golden State.<\/p>\n \u201cIf he really wants to fix it, then we should talk about a federal incentive passed to keep people working in Los Angeles,\u201d Clooney said of Trump.<\/p>\n \u201cBecause there are tons of below the line people \u2014 grips and cinematographers \u2014 who are losing their jobs because work is going away, leaving to\u2026 New York, and Louisiana and places like that, but also to London and other places,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cSo it\u2019d be nice if we had a federal sort of rebate,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
