The Simpsons family is heading to theaters \u2026 again.<\/p>\n
The official Instagram account for 20th Century Studios announced the \u201cSimpsons Movie\u201d sequel on Monday, Sept. 29, with a photo <\/a>of Homer\u2019s arm grabbing a donut with the number two written all over it.<\/p>\n \u201cHomer\u2019s coming back for seconds,\u201d the image read.<\/p>\n The caption noted that the sequel will hit theaters on July 23, 2027, two decades after \u201cThe Simpsons Movie\u201d premiered. <\/p>\n \u201cThe Simpsons\u201d previously predicted that 20 years would go by between films. In the first episode released after the \u201cSimpsons Movie\u201d premiere, titled \u201cHe Loves to Fly and He D\u2019ohs,\u201d Bart\u2019s opening credits chalkboard message read, \u201cI will not wait 20 years to make another movie.\u201d<\/p>\n The joke was fitting at the time considering \u201cThe Simpsons\u201d was on the air for nearly 20 years before the first film\u2019s release. The animated sitcom premiered in 1989, and the movie debuted in 2007. <\/p>\n No plot details have been revealed for the \u201cSimpsons Movie\u201d sequel just yet. The long-running animated series stars Dan Castellaneta (Homer), Julie Kavner (Marge), Nancy Cartwright (Bart), and Yeardley Smith (Lisa). <\/p>\n During The Simpsons\u2019 season 36 finale, a flash-forward revealed that Marge was dead<\/a>. However, since the episode was set in the distant future, Marge was alive and well during the season 37 premiere.<\/p>\n Fox renewed \u201cThe Simpsons\u201d through season 40<\/a> in April, simultaneously renewing \u201cBob\u2019s Burgers,\u201d \u201cAmerican Dad,\u201d and \u201cFamily Guy\u201d for four more seasons each.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are so proud that these legendary shows will continue for hundreds of more episodes, allowing new and longstanding fans to watch, rewatch, and experience more of \u2018The Simpsons\u2019, \u2018Family Guy\u2019, \u2018American Dad,\u2019 and \u2018Bob\u2019s Burgers\u2019<\/a> for years to come,\u201d Marci Proietto, the head of 20th Television Animation, said in a statement at the time.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Simpsons\u201d airs on Fox on Sundays at 8 p.m. ET.
