On Monday, Sept. 29, Disney and 20th Century Studios announced on Instagram<\/a>: “Woohoo! The Simpsons are coming to theaters with an all-new movie on July 23, 2027!”<\/p>\nA brand-new poster teased, “Homer’s coming back for seconds.”<\/p>\n
The animated sequel will debut 20 years after 2007’s The Simpsons Movie, which was the long-running television show’s first feature-length theatrical release. The PG-13 film proved to be a box-office success, earning over $536 million worldwide.<\/p>\n

It earned nominations for Best Animated Film at the BAFTA Awards, Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes.<\/p>\n
Back in 2007, Groening told BBC Movies<\/a> about the popular TV show’s journey to the silver screen.<\/p>\n“We’ve been talking about doing a movie since 1992 but we’ve always been working on the show. We work on it all year round and we do 24 episodes a year. We didn’t have a team waiting in the wings ready to do a movie,” he explained. “But finally we said we were coming up to our 20th year of existence and our 400th episode, so we should get a movie out.”<\/p>\n
