The Rock<\/a> and Benny Safdie wanted to make sure The Smashing Machine <\/em>looked as real as possible. That meant taking some real punches during some fight scenes, and unfortunately, The Rock says he got a concussion during one sequence.<\/p>\n Dwayne \u201cThe Rock\u201d Johnson was a guest on Tuesday\u2019s episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon<\/a>. <\/em>The host mentioned how real the fight scenes in the movie looked, and Johnson credited Safdie\u2019s \u201cas real as it gets\u201d motto for that. Johnson previously told\u00a0Variety<\/a> that Safdie wanted to shoot without his stunt double, opting to shoot it without cuts in a cin\u00e9ma v\u00e9rit\u00e9 style.<\/p>\n Johnson told Fallon that he prepared himself to take punches for real, noting that if you\u2019re going to shoot an MMA film, you need to \u201cgo all the way.\u201d One scene features Johnson, who plays Mark Kerr, facing off against a Japanese fighter named Kazuyuki Fujita (played by Yoko Hamamura) during the 2000 PRIDE Grand Prix. Johnson explained how this scene also happened in real life during Kerr\u2019s fight, and they needed to replicate it for the movie.<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s a scene at the end, and this happened in real life, Mark Kerr is in Japan and he\u2019s fighting in front of 30,000 people. And he\u2019s fighting against a fighter named Fujita. Mark Kerr is on all fours, and Fujita is just wailing away on him. Mark Kerr is not moving, but the camera is right there in this documentary [that the movie is based on]. And he\u2019s with it, he\u2019s not knocked out, he\u2019s loopy. He\u2019s just [staring off towards the camera]. He\u2019s taking every hit, and I said to Benny, \u2018That\u2019s how we\u2019re going to shoot this?\u2019 And he goes, \u2018Yes.\u2019 \u201cI told our fighter \u2014<\/p>\n \u201cOh, why did I bring this up?\u201d Fallon joked.<\/p>\n \u201cThanks, Jimmy. My jaw is not the same,\u201d Johnson replied. \u201cI said to our fighter, \u2018I know it sounds crazy, but you\u2019ve got to hit me. You have to hit me.\u2019 And he is a Japanese fighter, very respectful, he goes, \u2018No, no. I will not hit you.\u2019 He refused to hit me and finally I said, \u2018Please, we have one shot at this. You must hit me.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Safdie came over and told Hamamura that he knows he respects Johnson, but he also respects the fight Kerr had, and asked him to keep the integrity intact.<\/p>\n \u201cSo you\u2019ll see in the movie, [punches his fist] he\u2019s rocking me over and over and over again,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cIt was wild. So after that fight, you see me and I look like I\u2019m loopy, that\u2019s \u2018cause I had a concussion [and I was dazed]. But it\u2019s the thing you\u2019ve got to do. You realize if you\u2019re going to make an MMA movie, you\u2019ve got to go all the way. And that\u2019s what we did with this.\u201d<\/p>\n MMA star Ryan Bader, who plays Mark Coleman in The Smashing Machine, <\/em>spoke with WrestleZone about his working relationship with The Rock.
