After becoming the longest-running Black drama series in<\/a> premium cable history, The Chi<\/a> <\/em>is coming to an end at the conclusion of its upcoming eighth season at Paramount+ with Showtime.<\/p>\n As Deadline<\/a>, which exclusively broke the news, notes, \u201cthe decision comes ahead of the start of production on Season 8, slated for early next year, allowing the creative team to craft a proper ending.\u201d<\/p>\n Aside from being the longest-running Black premium cable drama, it ties Dexter<\/em>, Homeland<\/em> and Weeds<\/em> as the second-longest-running series in Showtime history. All three series are behind Shameless. <\/em><\/p>\n In a statement posted to social media, creator Lena Waithe said in part, \u201cWhen I created The Chi<\/em>, it wasn\u2019t just about making a TV show\u2014it was about owning our narratives and telling our stories with truth, care, nuance and complexity. It was about showing the soul of the South Side\u2014the beauty, the pain, the grit, and the magic that lives in every block, and in every family.\u201d<\/p>\n She continued, \u201cAfter much reflection, we have made the decision to end The Chi <\/em>with season 8. I know, for the sake of our story and our characters, it\u2019s the right thing. I am committed to delivering a final season that our Chi Family deserves. It\u2019s been the honor of my life to build a platform for artists to shine\u2014not just in front of the camera, but behind the scenes as well. To helm the longest-running Black drama on television is a huge honor and it\u2019s something I don\u2019t take lightly. I\u2019m deeply grateful to every single person who helped build this world\u2014our writers, actors and crew who give so much of themselves to make this show what it is.
