Because \u201cNow and Then<\/a>\u201d can\u2019t have all of the fun, the three surviving members of the Cars have spent several years recording and fine-tuning \u201cmore than two dozen songs\u201d that were in Ric Ocasek\u2019s vault when he died in 2019<\/a>. The songs, according to Bill Janovitz\u2019s new book, The Cars: Let the Stories Be Told<\/em>, <\/em>come from several decades of Ocasek\u2019s career and could take the form of a new Cars album. Keyboardist Greg Hawkes, guitarist Elliot Easton<\/a>, and drummer David Robinson have all contributed to the songs, which were entrusted to Hawkes from a close friend of Ocasek\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome sound more like classic Cars than others,\u201d Janovitz writes. One track, \u201cCan\u2019t Stop the Rain,\u201d was written around the Candy-O <\/em>sessions and discarded, while another, the ballad \u201cI Just Can\u2019t Say,\u201d predates the band\u2019s formation and features vocals from co\u2013front man Benjamin Orr, who died from pancreatic cancer in 2000. Two others, \u201cCrossing the Line\u201d and \u201cCrazy Over You,\u201d are described as \u201cloungey numbers\u201d that Ocasek experimented with for a jazz standards album that never came to fruition. \u201cThey were all optimistic that disagreements about Cars business,\u201d Janovitz adds, \u201cwould not get in the way of giving their fans unheard Cars music.\u201d You might think they\u2019re crazy, but, well, all they want is to get a release date.<\/p>\n
