Survivor<\/em><\/a> host Jeff Probst<\/a> warned us before season 49 began that not unlike a classic Glenn Fry tune, the heat would indeed be on. In fact, he told Entertainment Weekly <\/em>that the poor souls competing on Survivor 49<\/em> would get a \u201csmack in the face<\/a>\u201d from the intense heat. A smack in the face!<\/p>\n Well, we saw that smack on this week\u2019s episode<\/a>, when multiple contestants failed in their attempt to even string a few simple words together in the form of a sentence. And on the latest episode of his On Fire podcast,<\/em><\/a> Probst explained that the heat was almost unmatched in the 49-season history of the franchise.<\/p>\n \u201cI don’t really recall any season other than maybe Cambodia, <\/em>when we had three people go down in one challenge, that was this hot,\u201d Probst says on the podcast. \u201cIt was stifling. It was hard to think.\u201d<\/p>\n But Probst isn\u2019t just talking about the contestants. He\u2019s talking about himself! \u201cI was sweating through my shirts,\u201d he reveals. \u201cI was struggling with names and thoughts, and I’m eating and sleeping and, you know, fully supported out there.\u201d<\/p>\n As much as Survivor<\/em> tries to show the effects that extreme weather and lack of food and proper sleep can have on the body, some things just can\u2019t fully translate through a TV screen. So the host made a decision that he knew could make him look bad to millions of viewers \u2014\u00a0which was exactly the point.<\/p>\n \u201cI remember [executive producer] Matt Van Wagenen and I talking early on that, \u2018Make sure the editors know to leave in every time I stumble with a name or every time I’m struggling to catch my breath.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n And why would he do that, exactly? \u201cBecause we want the evidence to be there that this is really difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n
