In theaters Oct. 15.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>There is nothing accidental about the way Jafar Panahi makes movies.<\/p>\n<p>The Iranian writer-director isn\u2019t known for churning out sweet, innocent comedies that go down easily. He famously prods the Islamic Republic\u2019s oppressive authoritarian regime with his bold work. And, in the past, he has been jailed and banned from filmmaking and traveling abroad for his bravery.<\/p>\n<p>The man\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/global\/jafar-panahi-it-was-just-an-accident-cannes-1236402301\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">moratorium was lifted in 2023<\/a>, and he was able to leave Iran for the first time in 14 years. Even so, much of what the internationally celebrated 65-year-old does remains highly illegal at home and forces him to operate under a strict veil of secrecy.<\/p>\n<p>That means the Iranian government probably isn\u2019t as pleased as audiences are with Panahi\u2019s knife-edged, stinging latest, \u201cIt Was Just an Accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For officials in Tehran, it\u2019s just a sharp kick in the teeth.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--more inline-module--columnist inline-module--more--thirds\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<h2 class=\"inline-module__heading subsection-heading subsection-heading--single-line \">\n\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"subsection-heading__sub\">Johnny Oleksinski<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>The political thriller, which is having its local premiere Thursday in the New York Film Festival, is about four outspoken former prisoners who seek to get revenge on the menacing guard who abused them when they were wrongfully locked up years earlier.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s one small problem. Therefore, much of the movie takes place off the beaten path and inside a white van.<\/p>\n<p>That makes sense. His big-personality characters\u2019 mission is a discreet and incredibly risky one. They could all easily get killed for it.<\/p>\n<p>Vahid, the van-driving ringleader, recognizes the cruel guard at a mechanic\u2019s garage after he hears the squeak of his prosthetic leg. He follows his car and kidnaps him. Vahid\u2019s mostly sure he\u2019s found the feared man, but he was blindfolded during the torture sessions.<\/p>\n<p>Nervous, he wants to triple-check.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>One of the quartet is a photographer played by Maryam Afshari. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Neon<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And from there, \u201cAccident\u201d becomes an unexpectedly funny, getting-the-band-back-together road trip, albeit with looming dread, as he gathers up past prisoners.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The argumentative ensemble is the exact opposite of a Guy Ritchie group-of-guys-with-guns flick. You\u2019d expect to find these people in the quiet section of a library, not plotting the murder of an armed forces member. There\u2019s photographer Shiva (Mariam Afshari, absolutely fantastic), worker Hamid (Mohamad Ali Elyasmehr) and new bride Golrokh (Hadis Pakbaten).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She keeps her wedding dress on, like on an episode of \u201cCurb Your Enthusiasm.\u201d Curb Your Tormentor.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re not sure if it\u2019s him either.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The surprisingly funny film gets tenser as it approaches its ending. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Neon<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Neither are we.<\/p>\n<p>In short, the quartet has a man tied up in a coffin in the back of a vehicle, and they might kill him based on a hunch.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a perfect cinematic elevator pitch that won me over before I\u2019d seen a single frame of the movie. He insists his captors are mistaken about his identity.\u00a0The guy gets harder to off by the second. Yet aren\u2019t they past the point of no return?<\/p>\n<p>When at a \u201cWill they? Won\u2019t they?\u201d movie about a targeted killing, you know the laughs won\u2019t stick around for long.
