In 1947, a group of Hollywood actors founded the Committee for the First Amendment: a free-speech protest against politicians\u2019 witch-hunt of suspected communists. Henry Fonda was one of its first members, and now his daughter Jane Fonda is relaunching it in 2025. \u201cThe federal government is once again engaged in a coordinated campaign to silence critics in the government, the media, the judiciary, academia, and the entertainment industry,\u201d \u00a0explained its relaunch statement<\/a>. \u201cWe refuse to stand by and let that happen.\u201d <\/p>\n

Billie Eilish, Janelle Monae, Gracie Abrams and Barbra Streisand are among the musicians already signed up alongside hundreds of other entertainers and celebrities. The relaunch follows the recent controversy over late-night talk-show Jimmy Kimmel Live! being suspended from the airwaves under pressure from the White House and regulator the FCC. <\/p>\n

Even more topically, the protest movement was revived on the same day a close ally of the US president\u00a0issued a threat<\/a>\u00a0that ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] officials will be attending the Super Bowl for Bad Bunny\u2019s half-time show, adding that \u201cit\u2019s so shameful they\u2019ve decided to pick somebody who seems to hate America so much to represent them at the half-time show\u201d.<\/p>\n
