The last few years of the Smashing Pumpkins\u2019 \u201990s run were a little chaotic. Drummer Jimmy Chamberlin was fired and then rehired, and bassist D\u2019arcy Wretzky permanently left the band. Frontman Billy Corgan envisioned another epic double album as a grand farewell record. But Virgin Records, stung by low sales for 1998\u2019s Adore<\/em>, only agreed to release a single-disc version of Machina\/The Machines of God <\/em>in February 2000.<\/p>\n

As the year wound down, Corgan decided to go out with a bang, assembling the extra music Virgin declined to release as Machina II\/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music<\/em>. Corgan had 25 vinyl copies pressed up and given away to friends and fans with instructions to share the music on the internet, and the album existed for decades only as a beloved bootleg. Machina II<\/em> opens with a couple of uptempo rockers including \u201cCash Car Star,\u201d featuring lyrics that seemed pointedly disillusioned with show business.<\/p>\n

The band reunited in 2006 and have released many new albums since then, but for many years a proper release of Machina II<\/em> remained elusive. And then this month Smashing Pumpkins released Machina \u2013 Aranea Alba Edition<\/em><\/a>, a massive 80-song box set featuring an expanded version of both albums. The Machina II<\/em> songs \u201cSpeed Kills,\u201d \u201cLet Me Give the World To You,\u201d and \u201cReal Love\u201d have appeared on reissues and compilations over the years. But the new box set offers the first retail release of most of the songs on the album, albeit in a very expensive limited edition package ($395), including \u201cCash Car Star,\u201d which the band performed on television multiple times.<\/p>\n

\u201cCash Car Star\u201d made its live debut in October 1998, when Smashing Pumpkins opened for Kiss at Dodger Stadium for a Halloween special broadcast on the Fox network.<\/p>\n

Two years later, in between the black market release of Machina II<\/em> and the band\u2019s farewell shows in Chicago, the band made one last television appearance, playing \u201cCash Car Star\u201d on The Tonight Show<\/em>. Host Jay Leno walked over to banter with Corgan afterwards, asking why the band was breaking up. \u201cComedy doesn\u2019t pay, Jay,\u201d Corgan deadpanned. \u201cYou\u2019ll be back, you guys will be back,\u201d said Leno, who\u2019d later have his own struggles with gracefully leaving the spotlight.<\/p>\n

Three more essential Smashing Pumpkins deep album cuts:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u201cHummer\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Siamese Dream<\/em> is more purely a guitar album than the Smashing Pumpkins records that would follow it. But the \u201cHummer\u201d intro is one of the album\u2019s more unusual moments, a distorted loop of Corgan playing sitar that producer Butch Vig chopped up on the same Akai S 1000 sampler that he\u2019d go on to use for many of Garbage\u2019s early songs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cStarla\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1994\u2019s Pisces Iscariot<\/em> is one of the most impressive rarities compilations in the alternative rock canon, full of great songs that somehow didn\u2019t make the cut for the band\u2019s early albums. The 11-minute \u201cStarla,\u201d originally released on the B-side of the \u201cI Am One\u201d single, climaxes with arguably Corgan\u2019s most transcendent guitar solo.<\/p>\n

\u201cHere is No Why\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The tuneful Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness<\/em> highlight \u201cHere is No Why\u201d is sandwiched between the band\u2019s heaviest hits, \u201cZero\u201d and \u201cBullet With Butterfly Wings.\u201d<\/p>\n
