On the page, we enter inside the mind of a teenage boy. It\u2019s chaotic in there. We\u2019re torn violently between love and self-obliteration, between the feeling of being very big to the feeling of being very small, always in flux and never safe.<\/p>\n\u201cThe boy, Shy, is at a boarding school for troubled kids in England in 1995. It\u2019s known as their \u2018Last Chance\u2019. Porter\u2019s writing is a provocation to sympathy. He\u2019s asking us, before we cast our judgment, to at least live a little while inside this maelstrom.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor the screen, however, Porter chose to \u2013 in his words \u2013 \u2018rewrite\u2019 rather than to adapt. Steve tells the same story from the point of view of the school\u2019s headteacher, who in the novella is a rare, unwaveringly kind voice. It\u2019s nice to see an author treat cinema as something more than an accessory to their own work. Ultimately, it\u2019s a daring choice that yields limited results.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs Steve becomes the centre of our attention \u2013 and how could he not be, when he\u2019s played by the extraordinary Cillian Murphy \u2013 Shy (Jay Lycurgo) is sidelined. He becomes the curious, tragic puzzle everyone\u2019s trying to solve.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
