The Slippery Rock University Music Department welcomes families from the local community with children 8 and under to attend a free Family Music Series, featuring four public events during the academic year, beginning Oct. 18.<\/p>\n
The Family Music Series is led by SRU music education students under the direction of Cassandra Eisenreich, professor of music. Each themed event gives children the opportunity to interact with music in an up-close, hands-on environment.<\/p>\n
Music students prepare activities for the series, often performing themed shows for children and families. Participants can interact with music personally, through singing and dancing along or even playing instruments.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe parents get to be with the kids the whole time and even get to participate in the shows to be involved with the kids,\u201d said Keira Mayhue, a junior music education major from Altoona (Altoona HS). Mayhue is one of several students who coordinate shows and activities for the Family Music Series.<\/p>\n
Students in the Music Department can offer their skills and passion to an audience of families looking for fun, hands-on educational experiences at no cost.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re able to use our gift of music and the resources we have to help the kids have a better day, and to go home with a smile on their faces,\u201d said Mayhue.<\/p>\n
