{"id":2068547,"date":"2025-10-04T10:36:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-04T10:36:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2068547"},"modified":"2025-10-04T10:36:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-04T10:36:07","slug":"mcgee-doesnt-support-washington-square-park-for-royals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/mcgee-doesnt-support-washington-square-park-for-royals\/","title":{"rendered":"McGee doesn\u2019t support Washington Square Park for Royals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"\"><!----><!----><\/p>\n<figure\/><!-- WPS-5038 -- removed the script from WPS and added the placeholder for trinity player --><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!-- CONTENT --><!--[--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The chair of the<a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kansascity.com\/news\/local\/article312332128.html\"> Jackson County Legislature<\/a> isn\u2019t sold on Washington Square Park as a future home for the Royals.<\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>DaRon McGee, Jackson County legislator for the 4th District, told The Star\u2019s editorial board on Thursday that while he\u2019s supportive of the Royals moving its ballpark to downtown Kansas City, he\u2019s opposed to the proposed <a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kansascity.com\/news\/local\/article308037740.html\">Washington Square Park site<\/a> near Union Station.<\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Both the Chiefs and the Royals currently play at stadiums in the Truman Sports Complex, which is owned by Jackson County. Other sites have emerged as possible contenders for the Royals, including North Kansas City and the Aspiria campus in Overland Park.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Kansas City officials, meanwhile, have pushed for a ballpark where Washington Square Park and a vacated Blue KC building now sit.<\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>McGee said, speaking for himself, he\u2019s personally not opposed to the Royals moving downtown, but, asked about the Washington Square Park \u2014 visible from The Star\u2019s office windows \u2014 he said he is against it.<\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is environmental DaRon speaking: I believe as a person who loves urban areas, I believe in having green spaces in cities. It really broke my heart as somebody who used to run in Berkley Park \u2014 the park is not the park anymore,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The Berkley Riverfront area, north of downtown, was once mostly park space and empty land but is being transformed into a full-fledged neighborhood and entertainment area with hotels, apartments, retail, the KC Current stadium, a future streetcar extension and more.<\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI get it, it\u2019s great for commercial use,\u201d McGee said. \u201cI like the fact that I could\u2019ve gone and walked my dog at Berkley Park, and there was nothing there. I enjoy having green spaces in urban areas. That being said, do I want to get rid of a green space at Washington Square Park? Probably not. That\u2019s not my idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"h2\">Washington Square Park<\/h2>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The future of the Washington Square Park site remains unclear. <a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/kansascity\/news\/2025\/09\/24\/crain-blue-kc-washington-square-park-royals-sale.html\">The Kansas City Business Journal<\/a> first reported that the former Blue KC property, vacated after the insurance company moved downtown earlier this year, is now owned by an affiliate of Crain Co., a Wichita-based development firm.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Voters overwhelmingly recalled Jackson County Executive Frank White on Sept. 30. Former Kansas City Mayor <a target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kansascity.com\/news\/politics-government\/article312358291.html\">Kay Barnes prepares to take over on an interim basis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>As county legislators are preparing to name a permanent replacement, McGee said he thinks there\u2019s a path to keeping the Royals in Jackson County in partnership with the city and the state.<\/p>\n<p><!----><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also vitally important to get something done for the Chiefs within the next year, he said.
