Nicole Scherzinger<\/strong><\/a> spoke with Liam Payne<\/strong><\/a> hours before his tragic death at 31.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d known he was in Argentina,\u201d Scherzinger, 47, told The Times of London<\/a> <\/i>in a profile published on Friday, October 3. \u201cIt was just chit-chat and pretty light.\u201d<\/p>\n

Payne, best known as one of the members of British boy band One Direction, suffered a fatal fall<\/a> from a hotel balcony in October 2024. (Payne is survived by his parents, his sisters and his 8-year-old son with ex Cheryl Cole.)<\/p>\n

Scherzinger initially met Payne in 2010, when she watched his The X Factor UK <\/i>audition and helped put One Direction together as a band. They later bonded as mentors on Netflix\u2019s Building the Band <\/i>competition, which aired earlier this year.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNicole Scherzinger was still in touch with the late One Direction star, Liam Payne, until the day he died, according to Andrew Lloyd Webber. The composer, 76, who wrote the music for Broadway production Sunset Blvd. which stars Scherzinger, 46, made the comments in a Billboard interview published Thursday, October 24. \u201cI suppose something that [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI just adored Liam. He had such a good heart,\u201d the former Pussycat Dolls singer added to the outlet. \u201cI barely knew him when I put One Direction together. I just saw these talented boys and was like, \u2018I\u2019m coming out of a girl group \u2014 I know the power of a group.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scherzinger found out that Payne died<\/a> shortly before one of her performances in Broadway\u2019s Sunset Blvd.<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cThe show must go on,\u201d Scherzinger said. \u201cFrom then on, I dedicated a little part of the show to Liam every night. Just a little moment that always made me think of him.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Tony-winning actress, who played Norma Desmond in Sunset Blvd. <\/i>before <\/i>it closed this summer, also started reexamining her priorities in the wake of Payne\u2019s untimely death.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need more compassion in the world,\u201d Scherzinger added to the British newspaper.\u201cOur phones are our enemies as much as they help us. I wish we\u2019d cancel \u2018cancel culture.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
