Tereza Nvotov\u00e1<\/a>\u2019s \u201cFather\u201d has won the Golden Eye award at Zurich Film Festival.<\/p>\n Showcased in the Feature Film Competition \u2013 dedicated to first, second and third feature films by emerging directors \u2013 the Slovak-Czech-Polish drama impressed jurors Reinaldo Marcus Green, Leonie Benesch, Carlo Cresto-Dina, Ali Asgari and Nicole Reinhard.<\/p>\n More from Variety<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cWe were deeply moved by the craft and the humanity of this film,\u201d they stated, discussing the story of \u201can ordinary family facing extraordinary circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIts central character is neither a villain nor a hero, but a flawed human being caught in a single, devastating mistake. The film shows how that mistake can shatter what we love most, and yet it is, at its heart, about compassion, hope, and the resilience of the human spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n Zurich\u2019s director Christian Jungen called \u201cFather\u201d a \u201ccaptivating thriller which takes us on a roller-coaster.\u201d\u00a0\u201cFilm is the medium of empathy and this film shapes our understanding of a man who did a terrible mistake, but is not evil,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n In \u201cFather,\u201d which world premiered in Venice and was recently selected as Slovak Oscar entry, a father accidentally causes a tragedy. Nvotov\u00e1\u2019s co-writer Du\u0161an Budzak based it on the story of his friend.<\/p>\n \u201cI kept reading about it, about that \u2018forgotten baby syndrome.\u2019 It\u2019s hundreds of cases every year, all around the world,\u201d she previously told Variety.<\/p>\n \u201cWe had that personal connection because of Du\u0161an, but then we moved away from it. All these stories were quite similar. Mostly, it happens to a very loving parent. To all kinds of people, old, young, coming from all social classes. If we would like to simplify it, I would say it\u2019s a memory failure. And now, with rising temperatures and more cars than ever, it\u2019s happening more and more often.\u201d<\/p>\n Two special mentions in the category went to \u201cLove Letters\u201d by Alice Douard and \u201cLeft-Handed Girl\u201d directed by Shih-Ching Tsou, the latter described as a \u201cluminous gem\u201d by the jury, \u201cpainful, sweet and humorous at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n Earlier this year,\u00a0Variety\u2019s Jessica Kiang wrote: \u201c\u2019Left-Handed Girl\u2019 is an assured and lovely portrait of difficult motherhood and painful daughterhood, but it\u2019s perhaps most entrancing for its turning-kaleidoscope-view of the director\u2019s native city, where the characters are the bouncing beads, but Taipei is the glitter and the dazzle.\u201d<\/p>\n Another Golden Eye went to Zurich-based Moris Freiburghaus\u2019 \u201cI Love You, I Leave You,\u201d shown in the Documentary Film Competition, making it the first-ever winner of the section.<\/p>\n \u201cWe had never seen anything like it before. In capturing his best friend\u2019s battle with manic episodes over the course of a year, Moris Freiburghaus\u2019 bold directorial debut gives us an unflinching look at mental illness and the unshakeable bonds of friendship and family,\u201d said jurors Matthew Heineman, Odessa Rae, David Osit, Katharina Bhend and Helle Faber.<\/p>\n Jungen called Freiburghaus\u2019 doc a \u201clove letter to friendship and a film by a very talented director who will have a long festival career.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI Love You, I Leave You\u201d also picked up ZFF Critics\u2019 special mention and Audience Award.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Ground Beneath Our Feet\u201d by Yrsa Roca Fannberg, filmed in an Icelandic nursing home, and Namir Abdel Messeeh\u2019s \u201cLife After Siham\u201d \u2013 \u201cMade with a daring spirit, shaped by a director deeply rooted in cinematic tradition\u201d \u2013 were also noticed, with \u201cLife After Siham\u201d given the Film Prize of the Churches of Zurich as well.<\/p>\n Full list of awards:<\/p>\n Feature Film Competition<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cFather,\u201d dir.
