Sen. Ruben Gallego<\/a> (D-Ariz.) thinks Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth<\/a>\u2019s recent attempt to flex his power was a total misfire.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Asked about the summit of top military officials that Hegseth pulled together this past Tuesday, Gallego told \u201cState of the Union\u201d host Jake Tapper<\/a> it seemed clear that the Fox New personality-turned-cabinet member was throwing his weight around in order \u201cto compensate for something.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s absolutely ridiculous,\u201d said Gallego, a veteran of the Marine Corps.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Suggesting that the gathering revealed how Hegseth and President Trump\u2019s administration are looking to use the military for political gain, the senator added, \u201cEverything he did at that meeting, he could have sent in an email. He was just trying to, I don\u2019t know, show force, and he looked very weak in the process.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Pressed to say more about what Hegseth was trying to \u201ccompensate for,\u201d Gallego said it likely boiled down to \u201cthe fact he doesn\u2019t know what he\u2019s doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cHe knows that within the Department of Defense, people think he\u2019s a laughing stock and that he is probably one of the worst Secretary of Defenses this country has had,\u201d he explained. \u201cI think he\u2019s trying to exert his power over some of these generals, but it\u2019s not going to help when he is clearly way out of his league.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

One defense official who spoke to Politico<\/a> on the condition of anonymity said that the whole affair \u201ccould have been an email\u201d while another called it a \u201ctotal waste of money\u201d that was \u201cnot quite a loyalty test\u201d but seemed meant to gauge something \u201con the spectrum of loyalty to ideology.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

During an event which lasted not much more than an hour, Hegseth ranted about \u201cfat generals\u201d while also declaring an end to \u201cideological garbage\u201d and a return of \u201cwarrior ethos\u201d in the armed forces.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
