Ridley Scott isn\u2019t holding back his thoughts about the state of the film industry, telling the audience during a talk at the British Film Institute on Sunday that most modern movies are \u201cshit.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe quantity of movies that are made today, literally globally \u2014 millions. Not thousands, millions \u2026 and most of it is shit,\u201d the Oscar-nominated filmmaker said in conversation with his son Luke Scott, according to Metro<\/a>.<\/p>\n More from Variety<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cI think a lot of films today are saved and made more expensive by digital effects, because what they haven\u2019t got is a great thing on paper first,\u201d he continued. \u201cGet it on paper!\u201d<\/p>\n Later on in the discussion, Metro reported that the \u201cGladiator\u201d and \u201cAlien\u201d director was asked if he has a \u201ccomfort film\u201d he likes to revisit. \u201cWell, actually, right now, I\u2019m finding mediocrity \u2014 we\u2019re drowning in mediocrity,\u201d Scott replied. \u201cAnd so what I do \u2014 it\u2019s a horrible thing \u2014 but I\u2019ve started watching my own movies, and actually they\u2019re pretty good! And also, they don\u2019t age.\u201d<\/p>\n Scott added that he rewatched his 2001 war film \u201cBlack Hawk Down\u201d recently and thought, \u201cHow in the hell did I manage to do that?\u201d<\/p>\n Of movies made by other people, Scott said: \u201cI think occasionally a good one will happen, [and] it\u2019s like a relief that there\u2019s somebody out there who\u2019s doing a good movie.\u201d<\/p>\n Fortunately for Scott and his fans, the director \u2014 who released \u201cGladiator II\u201d starring Paul Mescal last year \u2014 said retirement for him would be \u201cimpossible.\u201d He confirmed that he has completed production on his next project, the post-apocalyptic sci-fi film \u201cThe Dog Stars\u201d with Jacob Elordi, and has started writing a third \u201cGladiator.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s around and he technically is the Emperor of Rome\u201d Scott said of Paul Mescal\u2019s character, \u201cand so I have a footprint about what I think it should be.\u201d<\/p>\n But, he added: \u201cI\u2019m not going to tell you in case you steal it!\u201d<\/p>\n Best of Variety<\/strong><\/p>\n Sign up for Variety’s Newsletter<\/a>.
