{"id":2073110,"date":"2025-10-06T20:15:05","date_gmt":"2025-10-06T20:15:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2073110"},"modified":"2025-10-06T20:15:05","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T20:15:05","slug":"nyus-easterly-to-deliver-henry-george-lecture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/nyus-easterly-to-deliver-henry-george-lecture\/","title":{"rendered":"NYU\u2019s Easterly to Deliver Henry George Lecture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">William Easterly, Ph.D., professor of economics and co-director of the Development Research Institute at New York University, will take his place later this month among the great speakers to present at the Fall Henry George Lecture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dr. Easterly will deliver his lecture, \u201cViolent Saviors: Development Lessons from the History of Colonialism,\u201d at the 39th Fall Henry George Lecture. Dr. Easterly\u2019s presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, in the McIlhenny Ballroom at The University of Scranton\u2019s DeNaples Center. It is free and open to the public.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scranton.edu\/academics\/ksom\/eco-fin\/henry-george\/index.shtml\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Henry George Lecture Series<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which hosts an event in the fall and another in the spring, is the premier series of its kind in Northeastern Pennsylvania. All speakers are decorated authorities in the field of economics and 13 of the speakers \u2014 12 fall lecturers and one spring seminar speaker \u2014 have gone on to win the Nobel Prize.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dr. Easterly is the author of three books and his fourth book, \u201cViolent Saviors: The West\u2019s Conquest of the Rest,\u201d will be released on Nov. 4.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Early reviews have called Dr. Easterly\u2019s forthcoming book a \u201cmasterpiece,\u201d in which he explores nearly 400 years of world history. He argues that global trade has given agency to billions of people and presents a new and urgent perspective on global economics that he says must lead the way in the fight against poverty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dr. Easterly, who received a Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1985, worked from 1985 to 2001 at the World Bank as an economist and senior adviser in the Macroeconomics and Growth Division. He then worked at the Institute for International Economics and the Center for Global Development until 2003, at which time he began teaching at NYU.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dr. Easterly\u2019s first book, \u201cThe White Man\u2019s Burden: Why the West\u2019s Efforts to Aid the Rest Have Done So Much Ill,\u201d won the FA Hayek Award from the Manhattan Institute. He\u2019s also the author of \u201cThe Elusive Quest for Growth: Economists\u2019 Adventures and Misadventures in the Tropics,\u201d and \u201cThe Tyranny of Experts: Economists, Dictators and the Forgotten Rights of the Poor.\u201d He has also published more than 70 peer-reviewed academic articles and has written columns and reviews for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, New York Review of Books and the Washington Post.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He has served as co-editor of the Journal of Development Economics and as director of the Aid Watch blog. He is a research associate of National Bureau of Economic Research and was named by research.com as one of the Best Scientists of 2023. He won the Julian L.
