California Gov. Gavin Newsom<\/a> (D) used the release of pop sensation Taylor Swift\u2019s <\/a>newest album last week to troll President Donald Trump. <\/a><\/p>\n Swift\u2019s highly anticipated twelfth album, \u201cThe Life of a Showgirl,\u201d<\/a> soared to the top of the charts shortly after its release on Friday. As Swifties celebrated her new album, Newsom joined in on the fun with a video that included one of the pop star\u2019s new songs, titled \u201cActually Romantic.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n The lyrics describe a one-sided feud with Swift, with her singing that someone\u2019s obsession with her is \u201cactually romantic.\u201d Newsom used the song to mock Trump\u2019s frequent criticism of him in a video posted to Instagram<\/a> over the weekend. <\/p>\n The video begins with footage of Newsom and Trump walking together as \u201cActually Romantic\u201d begins to play. <\/p>\n \u201cBut it\u2019s actually sweet, all the time you spent on me,\u201d Swift sings as a video appears on the screen showing Newsom and Trump shaking hands.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s honestly wild, all the effort you\u2019ve put in,\u201d the song continues as screenshots of Trump\u2019s social media posts targeting Newsom appear on the screen.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s actually romantic. I really gotta hand it to you,\u201d the song continues. \u201cNo man has ever loved me like you do.\u201d<\/p>\n The video included a screenshot of Trump declaring that Swift is \u201cno longer \u2018HOT\u2019\u201d. The video then showed a screenshot of Newsom\u2019s press office writing on X that Trump is \u201cno longer \u2018hot.\u2019\u201d<\/a> <\/p>\n It then showed a tank top from Newsom\u2019s \u201cPatriot\u201d apparel shop that states, \u201cTrump is not hot.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n Trump has held a long-time feud<\/a> with Swift, posting in September 2024,\u201cI HATE TAYLOR SWIFT,\u201d<\/a> on his Truth Social platform. Swift ultimately endorsed<\/a> then-Vice President Kamala Harris for the White House last year. <\/p>\n Newsom has also escalated his attacks on Trump in recent months.<\/p>\n Newsom\u2019s press office has been mocking Trump<\/a> by mimicking the president\u2019s social media posts for months, often tweeting posts in all-caps and giving his political rivals new nicknames. The MAGA base and conservatives have complained about Newsom\u2019s new social media strategy,<\/a> with many arguing that he is not being authentic.<\/p>\n Newsom even took the trolling a step further last month by launching his own merchandise shop<\/a> that plays off Trump\u2019s slogan, \u201cMake America Great Again.\u201d<\/p>\n An analysis from celebrity.land data guru Harry Enten<\/a> in August found that Newsom\u2019s new social media strategy is \u201cabsolutely\u201d working, citing an increase in social media followers and Google searches.
