He\u2019s responsible for all-time classics like <em>Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma and Louise, Gladiator, <\/em>and so many more. And, as it turns out, he clearly has a very high opinion of his own work. And he also doesn\u2019t think much of modern cinema. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/global\/ridley-scott-most-new-movies-shit-rewatches-his-own-1236540920\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Via Variety;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Via <em>Variety<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>we learned that while the 87-year-old director was speaking at the British Film Institute, he didn\u2019t hold back on what he thought of most modern movies. Not to mention how great he thinks his own films are. Here\u2019s what he had to say:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"mb-4 border-l-2 pl-5 italic text-tertiary\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The quantity of movies that are made today, literally globally \u2014 millions. Not thousands, millions \u2026 and most of it is shit. I think a lot of films today are saved and made more expensive by digital effects, because what they haven\u2019t got is a great thing on paper first. Get it on paper!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Don\u2019t be so shy Ridley, tell us what you <em>really<\/em> think. Joking aside, what does Ridley Scott watch to unwind these days, if he think most modern movies are garbage? It turns out, he mostly <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nerdist.com\/article\/alien-franchise-cinematic-timeline-complete-breakdown-video-and-infographic\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:watches his own stuff;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">watches his own stuff<\/a>. He said \u201cRight now, I\u2019m finding mediocrity \u2014 we\u2019re drowning in mediocrity. And so what I do \u2014 it\u2019s a horrible thing \u2014 but I\u2019ve started watching my own movies, and actually they\u2019re pretty good! Although he has some true stinkers in his catalog, to be so dismissive of most modern movies.
