LONDON (AP) \u2014 British author Jilly Cooper, known for her bestselling risqu\u00e9 novels including \u201cRivals\u201d and \u201cRiders,\u201d has died at age 88, her agent and family said Monday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

A statement from her family said that the author\u2019s \u201cunexpected death has come as a complete shock.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Cooper was best known for her books in \u201cThe Rutshire Chronicles,\u201d which portrayed the sex lives and excesses of the well-off, horse-riding set in 1980s England.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The books sold millions of copies in the U.K. alone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

One of the books, \u201cRivals,\u201d was turned into a hit Disney+ TV series last year starring David Tennant and Alex Hassell.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThe privilege of my career has been working with a woman who has defined culture, writing and conversation since she was first published over fifty years ago,\u201d her agent, Felicity Blunt, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cJilly will undoubtedly be best remembered for her chart-topping series \u2018The Rutshire Chronicles\u2019 and its havoc-making and handsome show-jumping hero Rupert Campbell-Black.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Born in 1937, Cooper cut her teeth in journalism at a local newspaper in Brentford, covering everything from parties to soccer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Her big break occurred in 1969 when The Sunday Times published a story on being an \u2018\u2019undomesticated\u2019\u2019 homemaker. It resulted in a column that lasted over 13 years. She went on to another column in the The Mail On Sunday for five years. Her first book \u201cHow to Stay Married\u2019\u2019 was published in 1969.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Cooper\u2019s many fans included former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who said the books offered \u201cescapism.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
