Fans of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation<\/strong> have long wondered why rookie investigator Holly Gribbs<\/strong>, played by Chandra West<\/strong>, disappeared from the show so suddenly. Now, in a special 25th-anniversary interview, CSI creator Anthony Zuiker finally spilled the tea on why Holly\u2019s time on the show was cut so short.<\/p>\n In a conversation with TV Insider<\/a>, Anthony E. Zuiker revealed that Holly was originally meant to be one of the show\u2019s main characters, but not everyone was on board. There was tension early on about whether Chandra West\u2019s look fit the image of a gritty crime scene investigator.<\/p>\n Zuiker recalled an executive even questioning, \u201cIs someone this good-looking really going to be a CSI?\u201d Trying to make it work, the team attempted to \u201crough up\u201d Holly\u2019s appearance, make her look less polished and more in line with the show\u2019s tone, but it still didn\u2019t sit right with the higher-ups, and they were told to \u201cget rid of her.\u201d So, in the second episode, fittingly titled \u201cCool Change,\u201d Holly dies from a gunshot wound.<\/p>\n Zuiker added, \u201cShe was the vehicle for the audience. She was the way into the show. She comes in first day of work, she goes, talks to Grissom, and she eats the grasshopper. She was literally Screenwriting 101, Teleplay 101, \u2018Audience, come with me. Let me introduce you to the world.’\u201d<\/p>\n He further shared that since he was a \u201cnew writer\u201d on TV, he \u201cfell for that trope\u201d and that \u201cit was a good mechanic.\u201d Zuiker continued, \u201cIn the end, I felt like if she\u2019s new and the audience is new to forensics, what a great matchup for the audience to play along with her. But she got caught up in the politics of casting, and it worked out for us in the end, but she kind of got a raw deal.\u201d<\/p>\n However, Holly\u2019s death opened the door for a new character to join the team. \u201cSara was born the second Chandra got fired,\u201d Zuiker said, referring to Jorja Fox\u2019s fan-favorite character, Sara Sidle.
