Academy Award-winning actor George Clooney believes<\/a> the Democratic Party has to get its act together \u2014 and it probably won\u2019t be asking him to lead that effort.<\/p>\n In an Esquire magazine interview published Monday, the 64-year-old movie star cited the Civil War, the war in Vietnam and the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy Jr. as very difficult tests the U.S. survived. He noted those 1968 shootings were accompanied by rioting in the streets and a fierce national divide that eventually cooled.<\/p>\n According to Clooney, the U.S. is again in a period where things will get worse before they get better.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re going to get through it<\/a>, but a lot of damage is going to be done along the way because of where we are. And it is heartbreaking to see,\u201d Clooney said. \u201cAnd Democrats are gonna have to get their act together.\u201d<\/p>\n Clooney was an outspoken Donald Trump critic during the president\u2019s first term in office, calling him a \u201cdumb goofball\u201d desperate to befriend celebrities before being elected.<\/p>\n Clooney later became critical of Trump\u2019s Democratic opponent, Joe Biden, whom he called on to end his candidacy following a disastrous July 2024 presidential debate between the elderly candidates.<\/p>\n \u201cI love Joe Biden,\u201d Clooney wrote<\/a> in a New York Times op-ed published days before Biden, then 81, withdrew from the race<\/a>. \u201cBut the one battle he cannot win is the fight against time.\u201d<\/p>\n The \u201cGravity\u201d actor told Esquire he doesn\u2019t envision doing anything like that again.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t think so,\u201d Clooney said. \u201cI think people have heard enough from me.\u201d<\/p>\n Clooney explained in his New York Times piece that he\u2019d recently attended a fundraiser for Biden<\/a> where he realized the incumbent wasn\u2019t up for another four years in office. He told Esquire he felt a need to speak out at that time \u201cbecause I\u2019d been a personal witness to things.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump has called Clooney \u201ca second rate movie star<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n
