Robin Williams\u2019 daughter, Zelda, an actor and director in her own right, has done an incredible job of guarding her father\u2019s legacy. And that legacy is under a different kind of attack these days. She called AI recreations of his voice a \u201cFrankenstein monster\u201d<\/a> a couple years ago \u2014\u00a0and she should know, as she directed \u201cLisa Frankenstein.\u201d<\/a> Now, Williams has taken to Instagram to protest the AI video recreations of her father that she\u2019s received in recent vintage. Whatever the intent of the people sending them to her, Williams isn\u2019t having it.<\/p>\n \u201cPlease, just stop sending me AI videos of Dad,\u201d Williams wrote in a post on Instagram Stories. \u201cStop believing that I wanna see it or that I\u2019ll understand, I don\u2019t and I won\u2019t. If you\u2019re just trying to troll me, I\u2019ve seen way worse, I\u2019ll restrict and move on. But please, if you\u2019ve got any decency just stop doing this to him and to me, to everyone even, full stop. Gross.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAnd for the love of EVERYTHING, stop calling it \u2018the future.\u2019 AI is just badly recycling and regurgitating the past to be reconsumed. You are taking in the Human Centipede of content, and from the very very end of the line, all while the folks at the front laugh and laugh, consume and consume.\u201d<\/p>\n It\u2019s interesting how much the use of generative AI is an artistic rubicon. Williams himself was a trailblazer when it came to different media, arguably creating the entire decades-long trend of A-list celebrities voicing characters in animated films with his role as the Genie in Disney\u2019s \u201cAladdin.\u201d An avid gamer, he even named his daughter after the \u201cLegend of Zelda\u201d series.<\/p>\n But it\u2019s hard to think of the use of AI in this context as anything but as direly derivative as Williams says.
