In theaters Oct 10.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cTron\u201d was groundbreaking back in 1982 for being one of the first movies to heavily rely on computerized special effects.<\/p>\n<p>Forty two years later, \u201cTron: Ares\u201d is groundbreaking for being the first <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2010\/12\/17\/tron-scendent\/\">\u201cTron\u201d film<\/a> with a discernible plot.<\/p>\n<p>Isn\u2019t that simpler story just a rehash of \u201cThe Terminator\u201d without time travel? You bet. But, well worn though it may be, lighter-than-air \u201cAres\u201d brings a welcome pulse of clarity and humanity to a franchise that heretofore has picked hard drives over heart.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As for brains, well, take off your thinking caps. Forget ChatGPT \u2014 this dialogue could\u2019ve been written by a hamster with ink on its paws.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t put my love of Depeche Mode into words\u201d\u00a0is one of Jared Leto\u2019s crazier utterances as Ares, an AI fighting badass from The Grid.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--more inline-module--columnist inline-module--more--thirds\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<h2 class=\"inline-module__heading subsection-heading subsection-heading--single-line \">\n\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"subsection-heading__sub\">Johnny Oleksinski<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Ignore his words, and you\u2019ll have a lot of fun.<\/p>\n<p>Ares, dour and stringy-haired like\u00a0a\u00a0homeless Vulcan, is caught between two warring tech CEO\u2019s: Good Eve Kim (Greta Lee), leader of the video-game company ENCOM, and Bad Julian Dillinger (Evan Peters),\u00a0head\u00a0of Dillinger Systems.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re both hunting for the \u201cpermanence code,\u201d a sexy bit of programming hidden on a floppy disk, which would enable their digital creations from The Grid to stick around the real world forever.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Greta Lee and Jared Leto star in \u201cTron: Ares.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Eve, nice, wants to use that power to solve the\u00a0planet\u2019s\u00a0problems, like hunger. Julian, evil, will finally complete his deadly super\u00a0solider, Ares, \u201cthe most sophisticated security program ever written.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But, look out, AI is getting mouthy and starting to think for itself \u2014 Cyberdyne Systems 2: Electric Boogaloo. Ares felt drops of rain, and is spouting off pothead philosophy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guess that\u2019s the thing about life,\u201d dazed Leto says, still in \u201cMorbius\u201d mode. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing quite permanent about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ignore his words!<\/p>\n<p>Trying to stop Julian, Eve gets sucked into The Grid, Kevin Flynn-style, and teams up with Ares.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the movie, directed by Joachim R\u00f8nning, could be summed up in a phrase: Come with me if you want to live.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Creations from The Grid could transfer to the real world forever if two CEOs find the \u201cpermanence code.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And come to \u201cAres\u201d if you want visual wows. The eye-candy film stands out at a\u00a0moment\u00a0when many CGI-stuffed studio blockbusters, including much of Marvel, look ugly and slapped together. You know: Paul Rudd mugging in front of a green screen. The effects here are sleek and sturdy, and make for several exhilarating fights and chases with neon flares popping against urban shadows.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re revved up by Nine Inch Nails\u2019 treadmill-ready soundtrack, which continues where Daft Punk\u2019s fantastic \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2010\/12\/17\/tron-scendent\/\">Legacy<\/a>\u201d music left off \u2014 with bass-heavy booms, beeps and boops\u00a0\u2014 that was both retro and right now. Only NIN is more strobe lights in a Berlin basement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The ensemble is sci-fine. Jodie Turner-Smith is fearsome as Ares\u2019 villainous Grid counterpart Athena. And Peters, never the No. 1 choice for any character who smiles, is temperamental and whiny as an entitled scion. Jeff Bridges is back, too,\u00a0seemingly on loan from\u00a0Disney\u00a0World\u2019s\u00a0Hall Of Presidents.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Jodie Turner-Smith is fearsome as Athena.  <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lee\u2019s the clear winner\u00a0here. Her character Eve has an intense drive as she hurries to complete her late sister\u2019s work while trying to survive The Grid\u2019s violent incursion onto Earth.\u00a0The actress\u00a0brings as much layered personality\u00a0to \u201cTron\u201d\u00a0as she did\u00a0in\u00a0indie \u201cPast Lives,\u201d which is hard when you\u2019re dwarfed by spectacular design and soundscapes.\u00a0Not to mention this \u201cscript.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leto?
