Disney decided to do something different, and adapted a comic from 1982 but set in the 1930s, bringing <em>The Rocketeer <\/em>to the big screen 1991.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">With an iconic outfit, a former James Bond as the villain, a rising star as the damsel in distress, and the weight of Disney\u2019s marketing machine behind it, <em>The Rocketeer<\/em> should have been a success. Movie fans during the Summer of 1991 were spoiled getting to watch both Alan Rickman\u2019s Sheriff of Nottingham in\u00a0Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, who\u00a0chewed up the scenery, and Dalton\u2019s over-the-top 30s movie star, who spat out every line with the gravitas of a West London Shakespearean production. It\u2019s an explosive performance that did not get the attention it deserved at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span>Dalton had to go over the top with his performance because the actual plot of\u00a0<em>The Rocketeer\u00a0<\/em>is paper-thin, and there are fewer scenes of Cliff flying than you think.<\/span> The Nazis want the rocket pack to create a legion of flying soldiers, Howard Hughes and the Americans want it for the same reason, but for the forces of good, and Cliff\u2019s in the middle, because he needs to use it now to save his girlfriend, Jenny (Jennifer Connelly), from Neville\u2019s clutches. It looks like a great film for kids, but even in 1991, it struggled to attract an audience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Opening in under 2,000 theaters, it pulled in only $9.6 million in its opening weekend, eventually legging out to $46.7 million, barely surpassing its $40 million budget, though unadjusted for inflation, it earned more than 2024\u2019s<em> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/topic\/Borderlands\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Borderlands;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Borderlands<\/a><\/em>.
