It\u2019s hard to imagine that a man who has been described by Esquire<\/em> as \u201cthe first honest-to-God movie star of his generation\u201d and by Vanity Fair<\/em> as \u201cthe biggest male star since Pitt or Clooney,\u201d and who was chosen as People<\/em>\u2019s Sexiest Man Alive and one of TIME<\/em>\u2019s 100 most influential people in the world, would feel anything but immense confidence. But Channing Tatum<\/strong>, on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>\u2019s Awards Chatter<\/em> podcast, insists that he felt \u201cimposter syndrome\u201d throughout his career \u2014\u00a0until, that is, he completed his latest film, Derek Cianfrance<\/strong>\u2019s Roofman<\/em>, which premiered at last month\u2019s Toronto International Film Festival \u2014 bringing Tatum the best reviews of his career \u2014\u00a0and will be released nationwide on Friday.<\/p>\n Tatum\u2019s path to Hollywood is highly unusual, to say the least, and literally the stuff of movies \u2014 the blockbuster Magic Mike<\/em> films, which he produced and starred in, were inspired by his own youthful adventures as an adrift young man who turned to stripping for lack of a better idea of something to do. For Tatum, though, stripping, against all odds, eventually led to dancing in music videos, most notably Ricky Martin<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cShe Bangs\u201d; then to modeling for the likes of Abercrombie & Fitch, Dolce & Gabbana and Armani; then to appearing in national commercials for Pepsi and Mountain Dew; and eventually to acting.<\/p>\n More from The Hollywood Reporter<\/strong><\/p>\n He landed his first film roles 20 years ago, and since then has proven to be a box-office magnet. Indeed, it can\u2019t be a coincidence that 13 of his films have topped the domestic box office in their opening weekend:\u00a02009\u2019s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra<\/em>, 2010\u2019s Dear John<\/em>, 2012\u2019s 21 Jump Street<\/em> and The Vow<\/em>, 2013\u2019s G.I. Joe: Retaliation<\/em>, 2014\u2019s 22 Jump Street<\/em> and The Lego Movie<\/em>, 2017\u2019s Kingsman: The Golden Circle<\/em> and The Lego Batman Movie<\/em>, 2019\u2019s The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part<\/em>, 2022\u2019s The Lost City<\/em>, 2023\u2019s Magic Mike\u2019s Last Dance<\/em> and 2024\u2019s Deadpool & Wolverine<\/em>.<\/p>\n He also has shown himself to be a gifted and constantly-improving actor who top filmmakers want to work with. He has been directed by Steven Soderbergh<\/strong> (five times), Quentin Tarantino<\/strong>, Bennett Miller<\/strong>, Michael Mann<\/strong>, Kimberly Peirce<\/strong>, Jon M. Chu<\/strong>, Lasse Hallstrom<\/strong> and the brothers Ethan Coen<\/strong> and Joel Coen<\/strong>, among others. And if anyone doubts his chops, they should check out his performances in 2006\u2019s A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints<\/em>, 2009\u2019s Fighting<\/em>, 2012\u2019s Magic Mike<\/em>, 2013\u2019s Side Effects<\/em>, 2014\u2019s Foxcatcher<\/em>, 2015\u2019s The Hateful Eight<\/em> and especially Roofman<\/em>.<\/p>\n In Roofman<\/em>, which is based on a true story that is stranger than fiction, Tatum plays Jeffrey Manchester<\/strong>, a military veteran who struggles to provide for his family; turns to robbing businesses (in the most polite of ways); winds up incarcerated; and then escapes and secretly takes up residence in a Toys \u2019R Us store, while also embarking on a relationship with an unwitting single mother (Kirsten Dunst<\/strong>) who works there.<\/p>\n The performance, which required from Tatum both emotional vulnerability and physical comedy, is the fruit of a collaboration with the writer\/director Derek Cianfrance<\/strong>, who is best known for the 2010 masterpiece Blue Valentine<\/em> \u2014\u00a0a film, it turns out, that Cianfrance offered to Tatum before the actor he eventually cast, Ryan Gosling<\/strong>. Cianfrance came back to Tatum all these years later, having co-written the part of Manchester with the actor in his mind, at a time when Tatum had grown disillusioned with the business and with fame, and had begun to work less than he used to.
