She led the Royals and was tied for 18th after one day with a round of 82.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt was a tough course, definitely one of the nicest courses<br \/>\nwe\u2019ve seen the entire year,\u201d Wynford coach Sean Weisenauer said. \u201cThe scores<br \/>\nwere a lot higher, but just being here is definitely a special moment for all<br \/>\nthe kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline Sheldon led the Royals with an 11-over-par 82 that<br \/>\nhas her in 18th place individually.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a little up and down,\u201d Sheldon said. \u201cWe all had<br \/>\ngreat holes, and we all had not great holes, but we came through strong and had<br \/>\ngreat mindsets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Starting on the back nine, considered to be the tougher<br \/>\nportion of the course, the Royals were plagued by a few really bad holes that<br \/>\ninflated their scores.<\/p>\n<p>One example was Rylee Robinson taking a 12 on her second<br \/>\nhole, the par-5 No. 11. She settled in to still shoot a 49 and then carded a 48<br \/>\non the back nine for a 97.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe high scores happened their first nine of the day,\u201d<br \/>\nWeisenauer said. \u201cTheir second nine, they kind of put it past them and gave it<br \/>\ntheir best effort and did what they could.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The brightest moment of the first nine holes was Maggie<br \/>\nRidge carding a birdie on No. 13. She had a perfect drive to the middle of the<br \/>\nfairway and then put her next shot on the green before putting in a<br \/>\nmedium-length putt.<\/p>\n<p>Ridge mostly avoided any really bad holes and played pretty<br \/>\nconsistently with a 49 on the back nine and then a 48 on the front.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was pretty fun,\u201d Ridge said. \u201cI was just happy to be<br \/>\nhere for the experience, wasn\u2019t really worried about getting a good score but<br \/>\njust playing hard and staying in a right mental state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wynford\u2019s other two golfers, Willa Johnson and Megan Young,<br \/>\nfound trouble on a couple of holes that inflated their scores. Ridge had one birdie on the day and finished with a 97 in the first round of the state tournament.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>As the first Wynford player to tee off, Young had a rough<br \/>\nstart with an 8 on her first hole. She also took a 9 on No. 6 and finished her<br \/>\nround at 115.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t a whole lot of holes,\u201d Weisenauer said. \u201cIt was<br \/>\ntwo kids having one bad hole and that kind of made their score go a little bit<br \/>\nhigher, but the rest of the way, they played pretty well considering how tough<br \/>\nthe course is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the start was rough, the finish was strong. Sheldon<br \/>\nclosed out the day for the Royals with a birdie on No. 9, the only birdie they<br \/>\nmanaged besides Ridge\u2019s early one.<\/p>\n<p>Sheldon said she was just happy to be making history as part<br \/>\nof the first Wynford team at state, no matter how the team finishes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s pretty cool honestly,\u201d Sheldon said. \u201cYeah, we\u2019re not<br \/>\ngoing to win it, but that\u2019s fine because we\u2019re all here with each other. My<br \/>\nbest friends are here with me. We get to stay overnight two nights with each<br \/>\nother, and that\u2019s a great experience for all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Defending champion Columbus Academy took a 10-stroke lead on<br \/>\nthe first day with a 317. They are only 13 strokes<br \/>\nback of sixth-place Van Buren, with fellow Northwest District qualifiers<br \/>\nWauseon and Archbold also in between.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was our goal,\u201d Weisenauer said. \u201cWe just wanted to<br \/>\ncompete with the teams in our district and even just compete with everybody<br \/>\nelse. The teams here are solid teams. A couple of bad holes led her to shoot 115.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The forecast for today\u2019s round does not look nearly as<br \/>\npleasant. While Monday\u2019s conditions were dry and hot for early October, with<br \/>\ntemperatures well into the 80s, the forecast for the second day is for<br \/>\ntemperatures about 10 degrees cooler with rain, including possible<br \/>\nthunderstorms.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Royals played a couple of matches in similar<br \/>\nconditions and performed very well, so Weisenauer said his team will not be<br \/>\nbothered by wet weather if that is what they get.<\/p>\n<p>No matter what, they are just trying to soak in the<br \/>\nexperience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s definitely pretty awesome,\u201d Weisenauer said. \u201cIt took<br \/>\na couple days just to set in. Even when we got down here, just sitting in the<br \/>\nhotel, I was like, \u2018We\u2019re here at state. This is our first time we can play 36<br \/>\nholes and just go out and play.\u2019 We have everything to gain and nothing to lose<br \/>\nat this point, so just enjoy the moment, enjoy the now. It\u2019s awesome seeing all<br \/>\nthe parents here, Wynford staff here coming to support. We\u2019re just enjoying<br \/>\nit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Based on their 10th-place standing, the Royals will be<br \/>\npaired with the 11th- and 12th-place teams from the first day, Ridgewood and<br \/>\nPiketon.
