(NewsNation<\/a>) \u2014 Netflix\u2019s latest series, \u201cMonster: The Ed Gein Story,\u201d<\/a> started streaming last week and spotlights the godfather of all serial killers.<\/p>\n The series follows the story of Ed Gein, a man who killed and desecrated the bodies of multiple women in Wisconsin in the 1950s. Gein\u2019s crimes went on to inspire multiple classic horror films, including \u201cThe Silence of the Lambs,\u201d \u201cPsycho,\u201d and \u201cThe Texas Chain Saw Massacre.\u201d<\/p>\n Asked by NewsNation\u2019s Ashleigh Banfield<\/a> why Ed Gein isn\u2019t a bigger name among those who study violence, forensic psychologist Kris Mohandie says his killings came at the very beginning of the phenomenon being examined.<\/p>\n \u2018Mild\u2019 horror movies to watch during Halloween season <\/a><\/p>\n \u201cObviously, there were serial killers before this,\u201d he said. \u201cBut in terms of the first wave of those that were studied, particularly by the FBI\u2019s profiling unit, people like John Douglas, he was the first and represented the pattern that we see in these people, which is one of violent fantasy, often trying out that violent fantasy in different ways before moving to living human beings.\u201d<\/p>\n The eight-part series unmasks Gein\u2019s life as he was driven by isolation, psychosis, and an all-consuming obsession with his mother, which led him to become a monster.<\/p>\n \u201cI think he\u2019s a classic serial killer who has a variety of perversions and paraphilias,\u00a0which are disturbing fixations on acting out against a non-consensual partner,\u201d Mohandie added.\u00a0\u201cSo this patterning is disturbing, but it is pretty straightforward.\u201d<\/p>\n Bob Ross paintings to be auctioned to support public TV stations after federal funding cuts <\/a><\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a lot of violent fantasy in an individual who lives in his violent fantasy life, who creates all these things that were in his house to relive those fantasies, have himself surrounded by what\u2019s stimulating to him, and then eventually kind of morphs into what he really wants to do, which is take lives,\u201d Mohandie acknowledged.<\/p>\n The actor portraying Gein, Charlie Hunnam, stated he wanted to be as authentic to the killer as possible to do him justice.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is going to be the really human, tender, unflinching, no-holds-barred exploration of who Ed was and what he did \u2014 but who he was being at the center of it, rather than what he did,\u201d he said<\/a>.<\/p>\n Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
